4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Supplement to More Complete Texts, March 4, 2005
By
This review is from: Color Atlas Of Veterinary Anatomy: Volume 3, The Dog And Cat, 1e (Paperback)
In this book, Dr. Done and his colleagues at the Royal Veterinary College in London have produced beautiful picture atlas of canine gross anatomy. The book is primarily made up of hundreds of excellent-quality highly detailed photographs depicting dissection of a canine cadaver. Each photograph is accompanied by a brief description of the view and a labeled line drawing identifying structures visible in the photograph. The bulk of the atlas treats canine anatomy by a regional approach, starting with the head and progressing to the pelvis. The first chapter contains a very useful depiction of surface anatomy and its relationship to the boney skeleton (juxtaposition of photographs of a live dog with a skeleton is an outstanding way to teach palpable landmarks); radiographic anatomy accompanies these sections. The last chapter addresses feline anatomy in an abbreviated format similar to the canine anatomy.
The greatest strength of this text is the meticulous and detailed dissections that the authors have generated in its creation. Many of these dissections are stunning in their quality and clarity; some feature unique views that are very instructive. The anatomical terms follow the Nomina Anatomica Veterinaria (the international set of rules governing anatomical terms).
The greatest weakness as a tool for the student of anatomy, however, is that this book is strictly an atlas-there is no accompanying text to describe origin and insertions of muscles, innervation or other integrative ideas that are essential to students who plan to use their anatomical knowledge in the service of surgical or clinical practice. Similarly, there are no dissection instructions; in fact, many of the special dissections that have been created for this atlas cannot be used in the teaching laboratory as overlying structures are removed and lost to study.
I recommend this beautiful atlas to my students of veterinary anatomy, but only as an adjunct to their other texts. It can provide excellent views of structures that can be difficult to visualize, but it cannot replace texts that provide more detail in a functional context.

This review is from: Color Atlas Of Veterinary Anatomy: Volume 3, The Dog And Cat, 1e (Paperback)
I am a currently a second-year veterinary student working as a teaching assistant for the first-year anatomy class. This book has served as an invaluable source of information to me. The color photographs supplemented by explanatory diagrams make this the best reference book I have found available on canine/feline anatomy. Highly recommended for first year veterinary students.
