3.0 out of 5 stars Better for fabricaholics
This is a good book, with wonderful information, but it makes the assumption that the reader has a large fabric stash. For beginning quilters, who don't have a pool of fabric on hand to draw from, another book on color may be better. The author has the reader pull fabric from their stash and put small pieces on worksheets. She does give you some tips that can be used...

This review is from: Color And Cloth: The Quiltmaker's Ultimate Workbook (Paperback)
This is a good book, with wonderful information, but it makes the assumption that the reader has a large fabric stash. For beginning quilters, who don't have a pool of fabric on hand to draw from, another book on color may be better. The author has the reader pull fabric from their stash and put small pieces on worksheets. She does give you some tips that can be used without going through the exercises, but to get the full benefit of this book, you really need a stash of fabric.

There are many good books on color. This book is what is says it is: a workbook. While the book is useful and informative by itself, it is intended for the user to experiment directly with fabric by gluing fabric to block diagrams in the book. There are many processes for looking at and analyzing qualities of color or qualities of different fabrics. In part of the book the users can take actual pieces of fabric and make sample blocks by glueing the fabric to block designs. In this way a person can check out how very different the same fabrics look with different positions on the block, or how different fabrics dramatically alter the look of a block. There are many blocks and many different processes in the book to help the user learn directly the qualities of color and fabrics. For example, one of the processes is for you to make your own color wheels using fabric (again, by gluing pieces of fabric to the blank wheel in the book.) This book is probably the most useful for people who are serious about planning carefully before beginning a quilt and who want to discover the most effective color choices for a quilt by being able to see how different color placements will look without having to go to the trouble of sewing sample blocks.
