This playful mystery involves junior ACME detectives, Ben, 11, and Maya, 9, in a search for the thief who absconded with the colors from the Painted Desert. Wordplay abounds as the sleuths go from California to Arizona, Louisiana, Minnesota, New York, Utah, and Alaska eliminating such unsavory suspects as Dee Molish, Freda D. Darke, and Nell N. Void. A wee bit of geography is tucked in as the duo travels about and technology that is?or will be?or sure would be nice?is common place. This book could be just the thing for some reluctant readers who are witty enough to follow and enjoy the wordplay. Ellen Weiss has lost count of how many kids' books she's written, that's how long she's been doing it. There are probably over 200, from board books to chapter books to middle-grade novels, fiction and nonfiction, silly and serious. They have won many awards, and have been adapted into a Disney TV movie and a BBC radio play. Two of them, THE TAMING OF LOLA and PORKY AND BESS, were named Bank Street Best Books of 2010. She loves to collaborate, and she often writes with her husband, Mel Friedman. She also loves to rescue stray dogs, but she had to stop when the aforementioned Mel Friedman told her he would divorce her if she brought home one more filthy, un-housebroken, weird mutt.

This is a very exciting mystery. It keeps me in suspense. The detectieves in the story were very smart and brave. The thieves were crafty. This story takes the reader to a tour in some parts of USA.
