Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Susan Chase works as a lifeguard on Myrtle Beach's Grand Strand, but she also specializes in finding runaways. When bitchy, penny-pinching Mrs. Rogers wants her 26-year-old daughter found, Susan almost refuses; however, once decided, she struts her attitudinal stuff in the face of jealous lovers, "artistic" temperaments, neighborhood drug sellers, and lecherous art dealers. Along the way she's shoved down stairs, assaulted in her houseboat, and accused of trespass and murder. Brown's (Black Fire) third novel offers local color, a stand-up heroine, and a deceptively simple plot. An outstanding read for the beach or anywhere else.

From Booklist

This Gen-X mystery set in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, stars a twentysomething tough-girl lifeguard, Susan Chase, who doubles as a private eye, specializing in tracking down runaways. Her latest case quickly escalates from finding a missing teenage girl into murder. Sort of a nonsupernatural Buffy, Chase will appeal to the same crowd that loves the campy vampire slayer. For more sedate readers, however, all the smoking, drinking, and swearing (not to mention ass-kicking) is likely to grow tiresome quickly. This is certainly not a required purchase, but for libraries that want to take a chance on a small-press mystery with the potential to develop a cult readership, it might be wise to pay attention to Susan Chase. 5.0 out of 5 stars He and the book is awesome!!!, September 9, 2000
This review is from: Color Her Dead (Susan Chase Mysteries) (Paperback)
I met this guy at a book signing in Charleston. And his personality stands out as well as his book, too. " The Color her Dead " is a very interesting, fiction-mystery book that leads you to ,one of the Southeast's tourist spots, Myrtle Beach. This book explains that Myrtle Beach does have " History " and in it, it has some mysteries that the readers as well as residents living at the " beach " don't know. And Steve Brown tells you all about the mysteries that is hidden in his books. If you have " spare " time you have to read this book, it's awesome!!! so awesome, you have to read to see for yourself!

4.0 out of 5 stars fun, light, quick who-done-it, January 1, 2001
This review is from: Color Her Dead (Susan Chase Mysteries) (Paperback)
What an enjoyable book! I live in the Charleston area, and this author definitely has the lowcountry pegged. At times Myrtle Beach is swarming with teenagers and young adults and this mystery is SO interesting that it's hard to put the book down because the action is never held up with overly descriptive, boring paragraphs. Chase, the PI who lives at the marina, is so believably real as well as the storyline is. The lowcountry "aristocrat" O'Keys family is so interesting. I liked the book a lot and the flow of the story made this a quick page turning read. Jenny's overbearing mother is a piece of work. This one will keep you reading til you're through so don't plan on getting anything else done once you start this book:-}

4.0 out of 5 stars GREAT FOR GEN-XERS!, July 1, 2002

THIS BOOK REALLY CAUGHT MY ATTENTION JUST BECAUSE I'M A NATIVE OF SOUTH CAROLINA. BUT ONCE I STARTED READING IT, I REALLY COULDN'T, AND DIDN'T WANT TO PUT IT DOWN. THIS BOOK IS PERFECT FOR THE MYSTERY LOVER WHO GETS BORED WITH THOSE OLD FASHIONED AGATHA CHRISTIE STYLE NOVELS. SUSAN CHASE IS THE GEN-X HERCULE POIROT WITH AN EXTREME EDGE. IT'S GREAT TO SEE HOW A MALE WRITER CAN REALLY FIND THE ESSENCE OF A YOUNG WOMAN AND PORTRAY HER IN A WAY WHERE SHE'S NOT THE DAMSEL IN DISTRESS. INSTEAD, AFTER QUESTIONING A MAN, HE'S LOOKING FOR HELP HIMSELF. I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANY YOUNG WOMAN WHO IS INDEPENDENT AND DOESN'T TAKE CRAP FROM ANYBODY. IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR SOMETHING FUN AND LIGHT TO READ THAT WILL REALLY TAKE YOU TO ANOTHER PLACE AND TIME, THIS IS DEFINITLY THE BOOK FOR YOU!
