Bad in oh so many ways,
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Color of Demons: A Martin Brothers Thriller (Hardcover)
As I understand it the authors have had success previously but either they chose a topic out of their depth or they had a bet on how quickly they could turn out a book because this is not good. I can forget the unbelievable amount of transposed words, sentance fragments and generally sloppy editting because it could be all the fault of the publishers. I can ignore the lack of knowledge of history but it is so much easier to say nothing than to incorrectly state history to move along your plot. I really don't think "The phenomemon that forms the premise of this story" (mentioned in the author's note) being real or not makes any difference. The plot is simplistic and ridiculous, regardless of your political or religious beliefs, and the dialogue is not worthy of a B- in a high school creative writing class. Interesting idea if executed better but the characters are one dimensional and unbelievable and the novel pretty much reads like a clumsy attempt at product placement. I will keep this book on my shelf as an example of how not to write a good novel.

A Great Read That Polarizes,
By Henry Hudson (Kansas City, MO) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Color of Demons: A Martin Brothers Thriller (Hardcover)
Let's get real. This book polarizes people. If you're looking for literary fiction to lull you to sleep at night, or even during the day, look elsewhere. If you're looking for a white-knuckle read that will keep you guessing and turning pages until the wee hours, this is the book for you. The story is no more "out there" than Star Wars or Harry Potter. In fact, many who believe that a great deal more exists than meets the eye will agree the story actually could happen. Nevertheless, if you're offended by the politically incorrect, you may well be offended by this book. If you are a diehard liberal who adamantly clings to secular humanist dogma that consciousness arises from matter [i.e. the brain] rather than material reality arising from [universal] consciousness, this story is going to fly in the face of your erroneous but steadfastly-held view of things. The Washington Post compared THE COLOR OF DEMONS to THE DA VINCI CODE, although the paper said it targets liberalism rather than Catholicism. If a book that lives up to that description won't offend you, you are in for one heckuva exciting read. In fact, I guarantee if you don't watch out it will keep you turning pages until morning.

A Page Turner with a Message,
By Thomas Booth (Chicago, IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Color of Demons: A Martin Brothers Thriller (Hardcover)
Okay, there are a few typos. Fire the copy editor. But one thing's certain, this book will keep you turning pages. It's a terrific adventure story in the classic sense, a white-knuckle thriller of the paranormal genre. A warning though, the authors make no attempt to be politically correct, and they identify evil for what it is, evil. Nevertheless, you will come away with the realization evil is not of the first cause, it is created by sentient beings like you and me. And though evil must be confronted, those who practice often are simply misguided, and no one, perhaps not even Satan himself is evil to the core. A spark of divinity exists in everyone, although in some in is buried down so deep it is almost impossible to find.

Gripping Thriller in the Vein of Magical Realism,
By
This review is from: The Color of Demons: A Martin Brothers Thriller (Hardcover)
I bought this novel at an airport in Hanoi and couldn't put it down the entire flight! I don't know who these Martin cats are, but I dig their groovy writing -- imaginative, evocative and thrilling! Sure, the plot was almost non-existent and the pacing was superficial and the dialogue was scraped from an old penny-candy jar, but, boy, what an amazing, stellar job they did with the binding.

A wildly tension-filled novel,
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Color of Demons: A Martin Brothers Thriller (Hardcover)
The Color of Demons: A Martin Brothers Thriller is a novel that dares to postulate a future in which Condoleeza Rice and Hilary Clinton ran for president against one another, amidst a stepped-up war on terror and the shadowy threat of spiritual possession. The result is a frightening thrill ride of a tale, serving the best icy excitement to be had from the only two-time winner of the Writer's Digest Book Award for Fiction and his best-selling brother. A wildly tension-filled novel right up to the suspenseful end.
