Book Description

5 and up
Written for "tweens" and young teens who'd like to make some money, What Color Is Your Piggy Bank? challenges them to start their own small businesses and provides the necessary how-to steps and encouragement. It is filled with tips, quizzes, fun facts, quotations, and real-life success stories that keep youngsters focused and help them get their ideas off the ground. With an eye toward instilling positive future habits, the author also offers good general advice on saving and spending money wisely and giving back to the community. But the book's goal is not just about money - in the process of running a business, young adults learn how to think for themselves, emphasize personal strengths, deal with others in a professional manner, and manage time and resources - all great skills for just about anything they choose to do in the future.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-8–This book offers great tips on discovering a passion or interest and translating it into a moneymaking endeavor such as after-school arts-and-crafts lessons or party planning. Chapters are short and to the point. Ideas are provided for creating a schedule, conducting transactions, follow-through, and being professional once the business is established. Explanations and definitions are clear for terms related to business, banking, and investments. Quizzes help to identify ability, lifestyle, and goals. True stories are included to inspire and motivate readers. The appendix offers "tip sheets" for baby-sitter, gofer, creative craft-maker, and dog walker. Decorative illustrations are included throughout.–Kathleen A. Nester, Downingtown High Ninth Grade Center, PA

From Booklist

Gr. 6-8. This guide to starting a business will interest readers who want to cash in on their talents and aren't afraid of a lot of hard work. The book is divided into three parts, each focusing on a different phase of running a business. The first section includes chapters on brainstorming and honing skills. Part II offers ideas on creating a business plan, scheduling time, and advertising. The final section covers money management, including starting a bank account and investing in the stock market. Giving to charities and volunteering are encouraged. Some of Linecker's suggestions are unrealistic or tacky ("Create great craft ideas with your friends and sell them at assisted living homes or convalescence hospitals"). She does better with generalities ("Your hobbies are a good source of work ideas because you already know you enjoy doing those things"), but the most useful information here will probably be the numerous links to Web sites. A glossary and an appendix of business ideas round out the book. Lauren Peterson

5.0 out of 5 stars The best money book for kids!, August 24, 2004
A Kid's Review
This review is from: What Color Is Your Piggy Bank? Entrepreneurial Ideas for Self-Starting Kids (Millennium Generation Series) (Paperback)
I've read quite a lot of money books, for kids, teens and adults. But they are either too easy or hard. Recently, I found this book in a bookstore, and boy, am I glad! I flipped through the book and I thought, "I finally found the perfect money-making book for me! I bought the book immediately and read it the minute I returned home.
This book gives you info about stocks, ATM, banks, money, and most of all, it talks about earning money. Through out the book, there are some quizzes (e.g. "Are you a spender?"), real facts, true stories from other kids, and lots of tips and tricks. I learned alot from this book.
If you're a tween, and you're looking for a great making-money book to read, then don't hesitate to buy this boo today!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good money book for kids., September 8, 2004
This review is from: What Color Is Your Piggy Bank? Entrepreneurial Ideas for Self-Starting Kids (Millennium Generation Series) (Paperback)
I've looked at a lot of books for kids and this is one of the best I've found. Not that many pictures, but great age appropriate advice on investing, making money, saving, and how to think like a business person. The author also explains that charity is important too. You don't see that too often, even in adult books.

This book is great!I've read a lot of books on starting your own business and so far this is one of the bests. It talks about ways your business can be sucessful and even gives a few ideas. It also gives a mini quiz to find a job you will like to do.It also talks about how to find a good business to start based on school, hobbies, and chores. You should definetly read this book.
