Very enjoyable,

I greatly enjoyed this coloring book. The paintings selected for illustrating were quite interesting and varied with many different subjects and styles of impressionist artwork represented.
Two or three pieces of artwork by each artist were generally illustrated, along with the name of the artist, the title of the artwork, the year it was painted, size of the artwork and medium in which it was done. Mr. Marty Noble, the illustrator, did an excellent job in representing the various paintings. Occasionally, as is Mr. Noble's style, (I've done several of his coloring books), the drawing will have a great many lines in it. In my opinion, the best thing to do when this occurs is decide what is the main thing being represented - be it a wall, a piece of furniture or trees and go with the main outline of that. In the case of walls of rooms, banks of flowers or other landscape type backgrounds, I used block-style pastel, decorating chalks, and applied them over the entire area with a Q-tip, then used a non-bleed thru marker to highlight details I wanted shown. These are intricate drawings, beyond the skill level of a child to color them. Highly recommended for adults who enjoy coloring and aren't put-off by a bit of a challenge.

I am very disappointed with this coloring book. For one, some of the artists included in the book weren't even Impressionists (van Gogh, Gauguin ). Some argue that Degas and Manet weren't either- but since they are commonly associated with the group, it's understandable that they would be included because they are in every Impressionist textbook. They had a wide range of cafe scenes and mother and child scenes which was great, but if they included Degas it would've been nice to see the horse racing scenes and the circus scenes. The Degas images they included were not among the most stimulating to color. Secondly, there are large areas like ladies dresses or carafes already colored in black!!!!!!!! What's the point of a coloring book if portions are filled in? I also think that if this says it is for kids they could've simplified the lines a little more to make it less detailed and difficult to make it easier for them to color and not have colored in portions. They could easily make a kid's version of this and an adult version for adult colorers. I would place this at the more advanced colorer end (10+). And by the way, there is nudity in this book, which is fine since nudes are standard in art- but if you're buying this for kids you should be aware of it so you can either tell them about nudes or rip out the pages. I certainily wasn't anticipating nudes, so it did come as a surprise and since this was a gift for my nieces, I'm going to have to let the decision to keep the nudes or tear out the pages up to the parents.I am very disappointed in this coloring book but don't feel that it is worth the postage and hassle to return it for $3.99.

I bought this for my 3rd grader and I'm glad I looked at it first. I ended up taking out 1 page (front and back) because I wasn't interested in my daughter coloring topless or bare-bottomed women. We love Dover coloring books, and there are plenty of other nice paintings to color in this book. Most artists have 2-3 paintings represented (Monet, Renoir, Cassatt, etc.) The actual paintings are shown on the inside covers of the book.

I just received this today. I am used to coloring the geometrics, prisms and patterns. This shows itself to be much more detailed. I will definitely have to use a well sharpened colored pencil!
