About the Author

Margaret Wise Brown, beloved author of Goodnight Moon, wrote countless children’s books inspired by her belief that very young children could be fascinated by the simple pleasures of the world around them. She created some of the most enduring and beloved children’s books of all time.

Caldecott medalists Alice and Martin Provensen have illustrated more than 50 fabulous books for children.

More About the Author

Margaret Wise Brown wrote hundreds of books and stories during her life, but she is best known for Goodnight Moon and Runaway Bunny. Even though she died over 45 years ago, her books still sell very well. Margaret loved animals. Most of her books have animals as characters in the story. She liked to write books that had a rhythm to them. Sometimes she would put a hard word into the story or poem. She thought this made children think harder when they are reading. She wrote all the time. There are many scraps of paper where she quickly wrote down a story idea or a poem. She said she dreamed stories and then had to write them down in the morning before she forgot them. She tried to write the way children wanted to hear a story, which often isn't the same way an adult would tell a story. She also taught illustrators to draw the way a child saw things. One time she gave two puppies to someone who was going to draw a book with that kind of dog. The illustrator painted many pictures one day and then fell asleep. When he woke up, the papers he painted on were bare. The puppies had licked all the paint off the paper. Margaret died after surgery for a bursting appendix while in France. She had many friends who still miss her. They say she was a creative genius who made a room come to life with her excitement. Margaret saw herself as something else - a writer of songs and nonsense.

This book is a "family memory" to be treasured. My grandmother read it to me (in her quavering voice) more than 50 years ago - I can still hear her in my mind. I have now picked up copies for some family friends, and one in advance for my new "grandchild to be."

Margaret Wise Brown (author of Good Night Moon) consistently charms. This book reads like my imagination worked as a child - all wrapped up in improbably dreams and King James terminology. The Color Kittens are in pursuit of the elusive color green as they mix and match "buckets and buckets and buckets" of color. After several false starts, "it came to pass, they made a green as green as grass." I buy books I think will interest my little one, but I want to enjoy reading them as well. The Color Kittens passes that expectation with flying...colors.

One of my favorite books to read to my kids when they were young...and they loved it, too! Was so great to see it offered in a board book! Margaret Wise Brown wrote it to rhyme, so it has such a nice "flow" when you read it.

My sister and I adored this book when we were small, exulting in the clever ending (GREEN!). My 3 year old grandson insists we read it three times before bed every night.

I remember reading this book as a child, and I was always awestruck by the fanciful colors and scenes. From the Easter eggs dancing around on little legs, to the dog and the cat disappearing into a soft pink fog, I thought the book was pretty great. So I decided to pick it up for my littles. But, as I went to buy it, I thought back to the wrinkled and torn pages of their other books, and instead searched for a board version of The Color Kittens. BOOM, found it! I was thrilled. I was also glad to see that it was unabridged. Now we read it all the time, and I can let the kids browse it at will without my supervision without fearing paper cuts, torn pages, OR WORSE. ;)Seriously, if you don't like this book, you're a communist.

It's a little dense for the age for learning colors. I read it once to my 2-year old grandson and he never wanted a repeat reading. He knows his colors, but he likes board books with fewer words.
