4.0 out of 5 stars Take control of your color choices
This book lays out a method of choosing color combinations based on a color wheel. As a quilter, you have probably been doing this all along without realizing it. I've usually found a calico I like, and then choose the complimentary fabrics. That has worked for me because I was choosing calicoes that had a definite harmony in them.

This book will help you become even...

3.0 out of 5 stars Simplistic.
While this book has helped me become braver in choosing and creating color schemes, I didn't think it provided much more help than I could find on a well-designed color wheel. I think it'd be great for beginning quilters, but as one who's a bit beyond that, I didn't find it particularly enlightening.

This book will help you become even bolder in your choices, and you will see harmonies where you don't expect them. Also helpful is the "color workshop" at the back of the book that can help you decide what colors to choose based on the mood you are looking for.

All in all, a fun and enlightening read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly Magic, May 5, 2003

I have a number of quilt pattern books, but the quilts I made were "blah". This book helped me learn how to combine fabric colors, values and textures to make eye-catching quilts. Plus there were full-size patterns included that serve as examples of the principles taught in the book, and quilts range from quick-and-easy rotary strip quilts to complex paper pieced quilts. In addition, the "block makeover" double-page section gave me further insight in the difference the colors, values and textures can make in the finished blocks. I got hundreds of color combination ideas from this one book...it is now my favorite quilt book!

I have several colour books now and this is the one to which I refer most often. I like the way the author has laid out the colour wheel and as I work I leave the relevant wheel open so I can check what I am doing.
her projects range from easy to thought provoking and I have found them very good instructions to use with my patchwork students.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great explanation of color theory, November 15, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a great addition to any new or old quilter's library. Not only does it have the color wheel that is an easy reference, it also has broad examples of fabric that coordinate, accent, and compliment. The color wheel teaches the relation of solid colors to eachother. Rarely do we use a fabric that is one solid color. This book takes it one step further and teaches your mind to see the actual color of the fabric beyond the print/pattern/shade/tint/tone so that you can choose appropriate coordinating fabric for your desired affect.

This review is from: Color Magic for Quilters: Absolutely the Easiest, Most Successful Method for Choosing Colors and Fabrics to Create Quilts You'll Love (Rodale Quilt Book) (Hardcover)
Of the many books I have read on quilting, this was one of the most practical and directly useful. It helps those of us who were not art majors catch up with those who were.

I received this book as a Christmas Present a few years ago. This book is excellant for finding a color combination or a color change. I use this book first whenever I want to sew a new quilt. It is a basic and VERY good book to get the mind working for new color schemes.

Even though most of us have some knowledge of color combining, it's great to be shown specific groupings and to be given the reasons why some colors work and others don't. Some mysteries are great, but color combining shouldn't be.

5.0 out of 5 stars The title says it just right!, May 27, 2006
Do you love to sew, quilt or create colorful things? Do you go shopping for fabrics and become dizzy with all the choices? do you dream more than create? This book is so packed with useful information, even a beginner will be motivated to get started. i have read it completely, and enjoyed every colorful page. i will use it over and over, especially when i'm feeling in a creative rut. It will get you going again with all the color harmony chapters, the color worshop chapters, about color values, solids, prints, and visual texture. it helps you understand the mood of your fabrics and will inspire you to turn your good projects into great projects. yes, there are even projects provided with everything you need to know, to be creatively successful and ecstatically happy with the results! i've been sewing for 38 years now. How did i get along without it?

5.0 out of 5 stars Takes the guesswork out of choosing fabric, August 16, 2005
This is a very well written and helpful book, for beginners as well as experienced quilters. I have talked to many quilters who are afraid of choosing their own fabrics for quilts and opt for buying kits instead. This book helps to explain and shows examples of how to choose the best colors to get the look you want.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have for every quilter who loves color!, September 17, 1998

This can be one of the backbones of every quilters' library. Besides taking the guesswork out of combining colors, and showing how the relationship between prints can affect the final outcome, each page is a treat for the senses. I had thought I already was very knowledgable about the color wheel, and discovered that there is much more to be learned. Additionally, the detailed instructions are enabling me to duplicate those patterns that I love most. Most importantly, the colors are incredible!!!
