This book is great! I've used it with first - third graders in class. It helps them become familiar with the artists work, and they also enjoy using it for tracing.

This book is great! I have used it with children in my classroom (ages 6-9 years). It gives them exposure to the work of Matisse, while the coloring part also allows them to find the details. It is also great to use as a tracing tool, or for patterning.

Ah, Matisse...turn of the century Frenchman noted for his wild use of color and vividly stylized shapes in his compositions! For only five bucks you get a "coloring book" with 30 of the master's famous paintings rendered by Muncie Hendler in outline form, ready for you to color-in or use however you wish.
Of all the Dover "Color your own____" series, I like the Matisse one the best. The forms he uses are so exuberant and organic, engaging and energetic. I just finished "The Tobaggan" (1943), and "The Creole Dancer" (1950), which is featured on the front cover of the book. You can learn so much from doing these pages: become familiar with the artist's work, learn the names and dates of his major works, and experience his joyful colors in a personal way. This type of coloring is fun for adults as well as kids, but it is also a useful exercise for the artist or hobbyist (like me) to test out and experiment with the various pigments and tools s/her has at his or her disposal. I've just started sketching again, and have added Prismacolor pencils and Koh-in-noor pencils, and some markers to my drawing kit. The Matisse book is great fun to use with my new pencils and markers. The line-drawings come alive with as I attempt to duplicate the artist's colors! Recommend.

I suggest using this for middle school or older if they're desparate. I have unique coloring pages for my elementary art room as a choice after work. They had some difficulty with it. Of course, Matisse is always fun, I think I'll just take this home for myself :)
