This is one of my most favorite books ever!
It is a coming of age novel of a young girl in the Dom. Republic.
Through poetry at the begining of each chapter the mood is sucsesfully set, telling of a girl who lives in poverty and the restrictions of the government. When she tries with the help of her family to resist them trying to take her property, she is struck by tragedy.
This is a beautiful, moving book that might cause a few tears. I cannot say enough about it.
I'm sure it will inspire others like it inspired me!

The story is well written and even well told. The writer has talent for children's and junior books. It is a good recreational reading book. Now my purpose for this book was to have my Latin bilingual class read something relevant to our Spanish speaking community. My students did a huge research about the Dominic Republic before reading the book, so they knew a lot about the economical and political problems as well as the culture. We were very disappointed on the book, the story line didn't connect at a deeper level with the setting. Also the cultural aspects of the character were flat. My students and I felt it was a good recreational book, but didn't met our expectations. We were looking for a meaningful Hispanic book, and all we got was an stereotypical narrative about how tourist look at us. I know the author feels connect to the Dominican culture, but there is a lot of the cultural spirit missing that "realismo magico" of the Caribbean.
