Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Whether you're looking to make a TV room more soothing or a kitchen more lively, this home-decorating guide by the folks behind the popular Discovery Network television show Trading Spaces provides a wealth of ideas for using color to renovate a space. The book presents more than a dozen of the makeovers that have appeared in the show's episodes, organizing them by "end goal." For example, a renovation that transforms a pale blue-and-yellow room into a lavish brown-and-gold den falls under the chapter on creating a "Dramatic Finale" (rooms "to elicit oohs and aahs"); the conversion of rosy pine bedroom into a Zen-like taupe-and-bamboo retreat appears in the chapter "Meditate on This." Though some of the Trading Spaces books can dizzy the reader with the haphazard variety of their ideas, this volume avoids such pitfalls by focusing on one specific design concept. The design of the book is cluttered, however, with multiple fonts, big pull-quotes and a general air of chaotic enthusiasm. A quiz ("What's Your Color Attitude?"), a listings guide to different episodes, and handy how-tos (e.g., tips on applying gold leaf, arranging flowers and laying carpet tiles) round out this volume's offerings.

As a fan of Trading Spaces this was the first book I saw out with the Trading Spaces name on it, so I bought it up but quick. Wow.. I cannot say how much I was disappointed. This book was a very VERY entry level book on color. I had no interest in much of the book, as the color schemes were too off the wall for me. A better book on color would be Home Decorating for Dummies or the Color Directory. One could go to an elementary art class and learn the information within this book. Total disappointment. I could have read it in the store and gotten the exact same information I took away with me. Avoid!

This book is great for those who wish they could stop, rewind, and replay the Trading Spaces room makeovers over and over again. There are several "after" pictures of each of the rooms featured along with directions on how to complete some of the projects in those rooms--including "how to make a lamp out of anything", making pillows, measuring for slipcovers, and numerous painting techniques from faux finishes to painting images on walls. An excellent book!

While this book will give you a lot of great examples, it doesn't tell you exactly how to put the pieces together. If you want to learn how to do it, read Martha Stewart's "Decorating with Color" instead. Martha's book will actually teach you how to use the color wheel to select colors that will complement your home and each other, while this Trading Spaces book really just shows you some before/after photos from the shows.

This book will help you become more of an expert or look like you hired one by exploring the aspects of color in brilliant detail. This includes how to pick colors with confidence -- frequently a terrifying experience for shoppers.

Most importantly, Trading Spaces: Color! will enable you to give your home the look and feel that you want.

"Color!" rules, you know what I mean. You don't because you haven't bought it yet. What's wrong with you...buy it. You don't need me to tell you what's hot. You know it's going to be a good book. It's "Trading Spaces". Anybody who's anybody knows "Trading Spaces" are in. "Color!" really helps you to explore your inner wall painting desires. All my walls used to be white before I read "Color!" by Trading Spaces but now all are filled of SPONGE BOB themes because I am truly not afraid anymore to express myself through my walls. I can hold my head up high. I have read "Color!" and you should too if you really want to be free of those boring stark white walls.
