Book Description

March 1997
Discrimination is not about black and white, or male and female; it is about physical differences. And, our perceptions of these physical differences influence our attitudes. Hence, instead of trying to change our differences, we should strive to change our perceptions of these differences.

Some of the chapters of this extraordinary self-help book deal with developing a positive attitude, getting along with others, and becoming more successful in multicultural America, no matter what color you are.

Editorial Reviews

From Scientific American

While directed mostly toward African-Americans, the book offers practical tips for everyone. It is being used at Xavier University by professor Fredoline Anunobi, director of international affairs. Ways Pearson cites to overcome discrimination include: Stop blaming others for personal failures, believe in yourself and your capabilities, find and be a positive role model, avoid negative people, use time wisely, and believe in the power of education as a means to advance.

Entrenched in the maritime industry in various capacities for many years, Pearson discovered writing as an outlet for self-expression. In addition to his book, his navigational articles have been featured in technical publications.

But mostly pearson hopes to help people become tolerant of one another. "People are people," he said. "If you treat them well and have qualities people admire, they learn to respect you for who you are."

From The New Yorker

Author details how to break chains of self-defeating perceptions.
