Editorial Reviews

Review

The following is an unsolicited review of The Color Scanning Handbook: Your Guide to Hewlett-Packard Scanjet Color Scanners, 1/e by Jerry Day. Reviewer: Gary David Bouton. Gary wrote "Inside Photoshop 4." "Inside Extreme 3D," "Photoshop Filters and Effects," and several books on Corel DRAW for New Riders: Jerry Day's "Color Scanning Handbook: Your Guide to HP Color Scanners" is a must-have resource for those who have purchased *any* brand of scanner. This comprehensive guide not only walks the reader through the basics--resolution, color gamut, color theory, TWAIN specifications, and more--but Jerry's intention is to integrate what you learn with goal-oriented work. What's a scanner good for? What are the optimal settings for scanning for the Web (and web offset)? Jerry's informal tone and energy clearly drive the points home, and make this excellent resource guide more than a handbook. It's darned good technical reading for anyone who wants to understand--and apply--some very well organized information.

2.0 out of 5 stars Touches on a lot of topics, but not in detail, August 27, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Color Scanning Handbook, The: Your Guide to Hewlett-Packard Scanjet Color Scanners (Paperback)
The book has a lot of information in it; although, it doesn't go into much detail leaving me with more questions rather than answers.

Also, the book does not cover the current line of HP scanners. It talks a lot about the DeskScan II software which, evidently, came with previous HP models; however, DeskScan II is not shipped with the current line of HP scanners. And the PrecisionScan software which does come with current scanners does not have the same features/capabilities as the DeskScan II software.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing-Just expands the operating manual, May 3, 1998
This review is from: Color Scanning Handbook, The: Your Guide to Hewlett-Packard Scanjet Color Scanners (Paperback)
I've owned an HP Scanjet 4c for about a year. I'm needing tips/techniques for faxing and OCR. The synopsis leads one to believe it's "everything a scanjet owner needs to know" There is ZERO about faxing and OCR in the book. It is strictly images orientated.

4.0 out of 5 stars MIXED MESSAGE, May 29, 2000
This review is from: Color Scanning Handbook, The: Your Guide to Hewlett-Packard Scanjet Color Scanners (Paperback)
This book is certainly worth the price! Jerry Day's photography background really shines through in his explanations. Here are suggestions that are "street smart," practical, and very useful. DISSAPOINTMENT: In the blazing changes of computer technology a three year old publication just does not qualify for an "A". Jerry did a great job, now let him update it.
