5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely beautiful and delightfully educational
My 18-month-old son and I both fell in love with this book at first sight. Between the deceitfully simple black-and-white covers lie the many artistically created surprises. My son loves to flip the solid-colored flaps--under considerate supervision so that he does not tear the delicate figures--to see what's hidden behind and has never ceased to be amazed. 3.0 out of 5 stars very ordinary art
This would be fine for little kids, but for pop-up book fans it is disappointing. The art is very ordinary.

As he pages through the book, he would say the names of the featured animals that he has learned, "tigger" "fish" ... he would sit there and look at this book for a dozen times or more, and he always comes back to ask to read it the next day. The beautifully designed and perfectly crafted surprises have really impressed him. It delights as well as teaches. An excellent book for kids as well as "big people" who love good books. I am getting a few more copies for friends with young children. (p.s. Murphy`s "one to ten pop-up surpises" is just as wonderful and enchanting, but a little bit too delicate for our little guy's fingers to handle--to pull, to dial, etc., so I always need to help him with that one.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just for 3 years and up!, March 11, 2000
This review is from: Color Surprises: A Pop-up Book (Hardcover)
My 13 month old daughter is so fascinated with this book she touches but doesn't pull (rip, tear, shred, etc.). She has torn apart other pop up books but this one is truly special. I would highly recommend this book for 10 month and up with adult supervision. There are a few colors (green, black/white, come to mind) that do require more manual dexterity than a very small child has but in general it is very well suited for pre-preschool kids.

5.0 out of 5 stars a spectacular exploration of color, September 12, 2001

Chuck Murphy is a treasure. Children and adults alike will thrill to the magical images revealed with the lift of a flap or the pull of a tab. A pink flamingo, purple butterflies, a blue parrot .... these are just three of the beautiful images that pop up, and the multi-colored finale never fails to elicit a squeal of delight from our two-year old.

We have given several of Mr. Murphy's books as gifts and they are always appreciated, even by kids who normally prefer mechanical toys to books. Two of the pages use tab manipulatives and are a bit more difficult for young children.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for pre-readers, October 12, 1998

My toddler (age 2 years and 1 month) loves this book. It's brightly colored and simple, but the pop-up sections give her little hands something to do and the pictures are delightful. The entire book is deceptively simple, actually: a very young child can laugh at the pictures, an older one can make the animal noises, and an older one yet can name the colors and each figure.

I also like the fact that the pop-ups are fairly strong, so they don't rip easily.

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Coffee Table Book / Toddler Ripping Fun!, October 12, 2006

Pros: beautiful and fun to "read"
Cons: Too fragile for children actually young enough to be learning colors

I gave this to my nephew, and my sister-in-law wanted to save it for when he was older ... because it was too pretty!

I can understand her hesitance: This book really seems more of an art book than a book for a child learning colors. The pop-up "suprises" are very fragile. They are made of colorful glossy paper cut into intricate shapes (delicate animals, fish, snakes, etc), whereas books meant for toddlers are typically much sturdier.

You could save it for the coffee table or for an older child (who, presumably, would already know his/her colors). Or you can give it to the favorite toddler in your life and accept that s/he will destroy it.

So, of course, my nephew did destroy the pop-ups, though he knows his colors now. If the book had been less "pretty" we all might have had fewer qualms. I mean, after all, what really happens to all the other toddler books we buy? They just end up in a box somewhere eventually ... so why does it matter if one gets destroyed through use? The book was fun and served its purpose. If we want him to have it as a keepsake, we'll buy him another one when he gets older.

Its joined his list of favorites -- He reads it a dozen times at a sitting and has learned to pull the tabs and open the flaps albeit with a little supervision so that he doesn't get carried away and try and pull those amazing images off the page. The only delicate one is the green pull tab of the snake. I've had to fix that twice in the last month. Its so beautiful, I don't mind experiencing it umpteen times a day with my son. Its incredibly educational too -- He's already learned to make tiger sounds!!!

Not your average pop-up book. The pages really do pop-out at you. An outstanding and colorful book introducing animal colors. This book was read to my 2 and half year old son during a library storytelling. It not only caught the kids' attention but mine aswell. I had to buy it. Your toddler and preschooler will absolutely enjoy guessing what the surprise will be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chuck Murphy's Color Surprises, January 2, 2000
This review is from: Color Surprises: A Pop-up Book (Hardcover)
An excellent book that keeps toddlers occupied for long periods of time. Our son is 19 months old and picks it up at least two to three times a day for us to read it to him. My wife is a native French and myself English speaker. Of course this book is not written for bi-lingual purposes but we find our child being able to repeat the colors in each language, depending on which parents converses with him. I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful pop-up book!, September 14, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Color Surprises: A Pop-up Book (Hardcover)
My son is a year old and simply loves this book. He will quiet down in the car even if I just mention "red starfish", "blue parrot" (phrases from the book) even whe he is not looking at the book. He hoos and haaas at th butterflies and does a "gggg" (for "grr") when he sees the tiger. The pop-ups are wonderful but seem a little delicate. He is allowed to watch and comment but not touch as we would like to savor this book with him for a long time to come.
