5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Textbook of Histology
This book is really one of the best textbooks of Histology I have ever seen and if you exclude (NMS Histology, concise and not well illustrated ) ,you won't find (as a medical student) such a comprehensive, organised, well illustrated textbook of Histology. However, you will need to buy a good atlas of Histology along with the book simply because the book is not an atlas. 2.0 out of 5 stars A horrible beginner's text.
The micrographs and illustrations are lush and colorful but do not correlate with the text at all. It's as if Gartner and Hiatt have adapted the better illustrations from previously used textbooks. The information is dense but only useful if you've already been introduced to the subject. If you are new to histology, you will be hopelessly confused. Furthermore, the figures will be useless because they are not labelled and not explained in the text.

One of the features that I liked very much in the book is the simple coloured hand-drawn pictures which simplify the real microscopic slides very much and make them easier to understand and to draw. Another feature is that the book along with the histology text has also physiology, gross anatomy notes as well as clinical correlations in an integrated way so that you do not need to refer to other textbooks in Anatomy and physiology to correlate it with histology text. During my histology course , I did not need to refer any other book in histology (except to NMS Histology to some bits which I did not find detailed info about it in the book). It is really good book and I recommend to you as a textbook and reference (Especially if your course involves detailed knowledge about the material).

1.0 out of 5 stars Most Poorly Written Book Ever, September 15, 2007
This review is from: Color Textbook of Histology, 2e (Paperback)
I don't what's wrong with the rest of you given saying this book is the best ever. Obviously, you have never read it. This book is the most poorly written text I have ever read. It mentions one thing and continues to explain it three pages later. It contradicts itself and is overly verbose. Often times, it is too confusing to follow the logic of the text. Whoever wrote this book should re-evaluate the people it is directed towards and rewrite it.

3.0 out of 5 stars This has the potential to be a fine book...., January 27, 2003

...just as soon as it comes out in the 3rd edition, assuming that the authors get a substantial amount of in-depth reviewing help in getting the bugs ironed out of it before then.

I've been using this book for a Microanatomy course in medical school. I liked this book initially, but there have been more than a couple of occasions where I've had to go to other sources for explanations of material that should have been clearer in the text. Also, based on errors and contradictions with other sources I've found so far, I've since come to believe that one can believe maybe 96-98% of the information printed in it. Perhaps the authors just 'winged it' now and then or maybe one or the other had senior moments (Hiatt is retired) and 'remembered' a few too many details to be true which unfortunately aren't. Regardless, if you're not already conversant with the subject and aren't comparing what you read here to what you glean elsewhere, good luck in figuring out what's accurate and what isn't.

It's still too early for me to have a really strong opinion of the competition, but based on G&H's relatively poor treatment of odontogenesis (tooth development), I was inspired to pick up the excellent-looking new (4th) edition of Ross, Kaye, and Pawlina's "Histology - A Text And Atlas". Their diagrams and coverage (for this subject area at least) are also not only more readable, but also more comprehensive. (This is particularly ironic, given that Gartner and Hiatt both hail from a school of dentistry.) Also, unlike G&H's text, Ross et al's latest effort *is* usable as a histology atlas (in my non-expert opinion at least), which helps greatly when one needs to know not only how things work but also what they look like. Given that the Ross book is also well written, G&H's effort is left with precious little to recommend it. Admittedly this is but one subject area among many so it's too early to say for sure, but for now at least Ross et al seem to have produced the clear winner.

1.0 out of 5 stars amazon messed up my order and won't let me rate my seller, September 17, 2009
This review is from: Color Textbook of Histology, 2e (Paperback)
I needed this book and it was "cancelled"

horrible service! and i am not allowed to give a negative review to the person who sold me the used book.

i guess it's better for business to lie to customers and allow people who don't deserve a good ranking to only get positive reviews.

AMAZON IS UNETHIICAL IN IT'S BUSINESS PRACTICES AND IT DISGUST ME.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Color Textbook of Histology, 2e (Paperback)
I purchased this book as an optional reading for my histology course. I did not use it as much as might be necessary for other courses but I was influenced by the fact that it is soft cover, small and lightweight making it easier to carry, and thus more likely to be read. I have used another histology book which was concise and very readable, this one is similar except that the images are in color and there are more diagrams to illustrate the histology in addition to microscopy images.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must buy, outstanding textbook, June 20, 2003

This review is from: Color Textbook of Histology, 2e (Paperback)
This book is simply excellent. It has great pictures and it helped my with my histology class in med school. It is easy to read and it makes histology a lot more interesting and fun to learn. It also cut some of my study time since it is not filled with unnecessay information---it gets right to the point. My study group and I also used the following that is also on amazon:
Histology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers ISBN: 0971999686
The second book was quite revealing with the kind of questions we saw on our histology exams. We all got B's and A's after using both these books. In addition, both these books helped me on the USLME 1. I would definietly get these books.
