Sunny, but with some real spine . . .,

. . . which isn't always the case with these Brazil-jazz projects. If it tips just slightly too much toward a jazz-lite sensibility, the leader can be forgiven, because the music here lilts and swings with a very attractive and authentic jazz vibe, and is never less than pleasant listening, even as it avoids the saccharine trap so much of this kind of thing falls into.
The overall sensibility reminds me quite a bit of Steve Erquiaga's marvelous disc, Erkiology, with a touch, perhaps, of Joe Pass's wonderful outing, Whitestone, and a slight nod to the late Herbie Mann's Jazil Brazz. In some ways, it's even better than any of these fine examples of the genre, perhaps having an even more truly jazz feeling than all of them. Featuring some of today's best jazz fusionistas, including Russel Ferrante, Robben Ford, Edsel Gomez, Airto Moreira, Luis Conte, and others, this disc should appeal to anyone who digs Brazilian instrumental jazz. Extremely engaging, and will with more listens almost certainly morph from its present ****1/2 to a full five stars.

I stumbled upon Sandro by virtue of Patricia Talem...and was blown away. THIS GUY CAN PLAY...but more importantly it's the MUSIC he writes, composes, and arranges. Honestly, if you don't like "Minas to Rio", "Aguas" or "Rafael's Dream" there's something seriously and musically wrong with you. I listen to all the guitar greats, and this cat's music and playing stand out. I would have preferred the rap portion in Aguas to be left out because it took me away from the exquisite groove he has going at that point, but nevertheless the song is a MONSTER. In fact, I need to stop writing these reviews and write him to find out when he's going to do another album.
