This is a good guide to where to find trails but lacks enough information about difficulty and length of travel. I read a copy which I bough a while back at a gas station, and it is worth while to have since it has some trails which are not covered in anyother guide.

I found it to be rather vague and hard to read, it was not at all comprehensive.

I found this book great to use for 4-wheeling. I also found it helpful to locate ATV trails and some of the other forest trails, as they use the actual national forest maps in the book. Wow, 165 trails are covered in this book... more than any other publication I know of. Great price too.

You'll do much better to buy one or several of Charles Wells excellent guides: Guide to Colorado Backroads & 4-Wheel Drive Trails, 2nd Edition

The disclaimer at the front of 4-Wheel Drive Roads says it all: "Outdoor Books and Maps compiled information for this guide from US Forest Service data and maps." This is a lifeless book compiled by a committee in an office park in some far away city, lifting lines from a government map.

You get no sense that the nameless compiler had ever been to the places (s)he compiles about. Eg. our favorite camping area has dozens of excellent 4 WD roads; this book mentions one of them -- the one that is so incredibly difficult that with 10 years of experience I'm still afraid to ride it.

The maps are confusing and useless. They're close up diagrams of lots and lots of trails and roads and rivers and streams -- but except for one or two described trails, no descriptions to tell you which are easy, middle or hard.

The trail descriptions are generally: Start at the beginning. Go to landmark 1. Go to landmark 3. Go to land mark 3.

This is a terrible book.

Not a very helpful book. The book I should have bought: Colorado Trails Southwest Region by Peter Massey; Jeanne Massey and Angela Titus (Paperback - May 31, 2007)
