This review is from: Eagle Wooden Boomerangs (Toy)
I have a collection of boomerangs, bigger than most people because I am left-handed. Boomerangs, like golf clubs, are left and right handed. All my kids are right handed, so I have 8 left handed and about 8 right handed.
It takes about 10 throws to get a good boomerang to come back. And if you throw them wrong, they break (hence low durability score, but don't buy a plastic one). The plastic ones warp and the cheap wood ones are hard to use. You really have to buy a decent wooden boomerang to get it to actually come back. And it will, and you will be hooked.
You need an empty football sized field and little wind (< 5 MPH) or it will blow far from the launch point.
Make sure to read the throwing directions, too, as it is thrown overhand like a baseball, NOT sidearm (which causes it to shoot straight up and then crash land and break).
No one really knows how they work. Physicists argue between the wing (which it is) and a gyroscope. Both effects are at work, and if you have a high schooler taking physics, they can read up on it and share that knowledge with anyone who will listen.
