From its source high in the Rocky Mountains, the Colorado river twists and turns, passing through five states and Mexico, before spilling into the Pacific Ocean. A spectacular labyrinth of gorges and canyons have been cut into the landscape by the river and it's tributaries. The longest and most magnificent of these is, of course, the Grand Canyon. On Friday, August 13, 1869, John Wesley Powell, preparing for his entrance into the canyon, wrote in his diary, "And what a world of grandeur is spread before us! Below is the canyon through which the Colorado runs. We are ready to start our way down the great unknown.." Today we know what lies behind every turn, but the journey down the river is still awesomely thrilling.
