Gr 3-6-Carrie, 11, is spending the summer at her great-aunt Mildred's ranch in the dusty town of Yuma, CO. She expects to be bored, but is captivated by Georgia, a six-year-old Paint that is "as fast as the wind," and she spends all of her free time riding her. Mildred, once a barrel-racing champion herself, teaches her niece all she knows about the sport and soon Carrie has her sights set on the competition at the summer youth rodeo. However, after a twister rips the roof off of Mildred's house, she decides that she doesn't have the money to rebuild and that the Western M must be sold. In a predictable flurry of events, Carrie saves the ranch and wins the blue ribbon for barrel racing before returning to New York City. Although somewhat slow moving, this is a warm story with a nice Western flavor that young horse fans will relish. A "Facts about the Breed" section supplies more information about Paints.-Carolyn Stacey, Jefferson County Public Library, Golden, CO
