Well researched, poorly presented,
By Phillips (U.S.A.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Colorado's Best Bed and Breakfasts: 100 Unique Getaways (Paperback)
I became aware of this guide when I attended a highly entertaining and informative talk by the author on great B&Bs to visit around the state of Colorado. I highly commend the author on her painstaking and well-presented research on each B&B described in this book. The part I found extremely frustrating was the difficulty finding the information in the book. Who was the Editor at Fulcrum responsible for arranging the information? HOW ABOUT AN ALPHABETICAL INDEX of each B&B WITH PAGE NUMBERS??? Instead, the book has an alphabetical index of each B&B with a tiny number that follows no chronological sequence on a map. Was this a young editor with eagle eyes? Although the Appendix does a wonderful job listing B&Bs by "Style and Substance": adobe, gardens. log cabins etc. as well as horse-friendly, kid-friendly, pet-friendly... no page numbers are listed! So let's say you want to find kid-friendly B&Bs quickly. Oops, forget the 'quickly'. Look at the list on p.211, write down the names of the B&Bs that interest you and then, happy searching! You can check the alpha-listing on p. xvi. which will tell you which number the B&B is on the map on p.xx. Then, more happy hunting! You'll need to look at all 100 numbers on the map to figure out where your number might be. Once you've found it on the map, then go to the Index and look through all the geographic areas it might be in: The Front Range, Northwest, West Central....Keep looking. If Fulcrum ever reprints this, PLEASE ADD PAGE NUMBERS to any mention of the B&Bs, especially in the Appendix. It would save the reader a lot of time! You are trying to sell more books, not take the reader on a wild goose chase. Readers who enjoy puzzles can buy books with labyrinths. To salvage the costs that have already been sunk into printing this book, I suggest the author add a drop-down menu on her website [...] that will facilitate locating the B&Bs in her book as well as update it. Several of the B&Bs have closed since it was published in 2007. Too bad. The material is good, finding it is too cumbersome to make this a guide worth buying. Just peruse it in your local library.

I like the fact that she visited each of these B&B's and has written a very detailed description.

This Book will make you a Colorado Bed and Breakfasts Fan!,
By Carrie Stark Hugus, author of Crossing 13. (Denver, CO) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Colorado's Best Bed and Breakfasts: 100 Unique Getaways (Paperback)
Tamra Monahan says "...the idea of sleeping in grandma's old bedroom and watching TV with the homeowners lost its appeal. If this is your idea of bed and breakfasts forget it." Colorado's Best Bed and Breakfasts does a fabulous job of describing and recommending the perfect lodging to meet any traveler's needs. From unique family vacations to romantic get-a-ways this book has it all in terms of bed and breakfasts in Colorado.
