5.0 out of 5 stars CHUNKY RIFFS, June 13, 2007

This review is from: Colorcode (Audio CD)
I purchased this CD years ago for a few bucks just on a whim and I was blown away. The track Two Bullets And A Gun is the kind of rock I like but hear very little of these days. A nice fat, funky mid-tempo guitar riff that screams. Stevie is a master at that stuff. If you look at his resume you'd see he's been around and played with some big names but I never hear anyone mention his name when guitarists are discussed. The guy writes some great tunes and I love his funk rock chops. I definitely recommend this CD to those that enjoy solid funk rock with attitude.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Album, But Not Great, April 20, 2011
This review is from: Colorcode (Audio CD)
Good, but Sun and the Earth (his greatest hits album), include the best parts of Colorcode. This was Stevie's first solo album released in 1990. Because it was recorded in the late 80's, it has that 'Hair Band' production where every song sounds like it was recorded in a stadium. This, I feel, hurts many of the songs. Unlike his live performances and later albums, this record feels a bit robotic-sounding. Bass and drum parts are simple and uninteresting. Being somewhat of a virtuoso, the guitar is always smokin' hot, with some incredible results 'Two Bullets and a Gun', The Harder They Come', 'Stand Up'. The ballads 'Caught in The Middle of It' and 'Just Like That' are harder for me to get into - I've never been a fan of 80's-love-ballad guitar tone (see 'Stop the World' by Extreme for an example). Another great song is 'Indian Chief' - Salas plays some very Hendrixian riffs and the lyrics are beautiful. 'Stand Up' and 'Blind' sound better live, though - you can find both on Youtube. Get this album if you want all of his records, and buy the Greatest Hits if you don't. If you like this record, buy his 1992 album Third Eye Blind feat. Boosty Collins and Buddy Miles.
