What Do You Believe?,
By
This review is from: Colored Sugar Water: A Spiritual Tale (Hardcover)
To the outside, Lucy seems to have it together. She's in a prominent position in her company, has a man who loves her, and a best friend who cares about her. However, things aren't always as they seem, as we find out in Colored Sugar Water. Lucy is unhappy in her relationship, feeling that the passion has all but dried up. During an unlikely phone call to a psychic hotline, Lucy's passion is reignited and her spirituality, her relationships, and beliefs are ultimately put to the test.Lucy's best friend, Adel, is caught between a rock and a hard place in both her personal and professional affairs. She is constantly making excuses for the behavior of her entrepreneur husband, his irresponsibility, and lack of commitment. At work, Adel must do some soul-searching to remind herself what she feels is important. Colored Sugar Water is an entertaining read, blending a sweet mix of topics regarding the spiritual journeys of these two women. Berry's subject matter may not be for the faint of heart or those of little faith - be it in themselves or their spirituality. The the book will force you to answer the question: What Do You Believe?

Colored Water is More Like It!!!,

This review is from: Colored Sugar Water: A Spiritual Tale (Hardcover)
There was not any [sugar] thing in this book to make it interesting or tempting. Needless to say, I am very disappointed in Ms. Berry's third novel. The book jacket spoke of two friends and their journey towards acceptance by growing in life, friendship, and faith. What we got was Adel's story about her failed marriages and immature husband; then a total thematic contradiction with Ms. Lucy and her tiptoeing on the brink of self-destruction.

A Spiritual Literary Treat,
By
This review is from: Colored Sugar Water: A Spiritual Tale (Hardcover)
This novel focuses on the friendship between 2 women, Lucy and Adel, their relationship with their significant others and their relationship with God. When challenges enter into their lives, they seek vastly different routes for consolation.Lucy is stuck in a relationship that she thinks is dull and going nowhere. On a daring call to a psychic hotline, she is put in touch with Kuba. Kuba enters her live and takes Lucy on a journey she did not expect. Adel is increasing unhappily with the politics in her job, and in a shaky relationship. She has never had a close relationship with God, but lately has been questioning His existence. The author tells a story about how each woman overcomes and grows during their trying times, while maintaining the most important thing, their friendship. Since I don't want to give too much away here, I will say this book was a refreshing mature read that you will immensely enjoy.

Good book (3 1/2 stars),
This review is from: Colored Sugar Water: A Spiritual Tale (Hardcover)
Let me start off by saying that this book is very underated. I liked the book because of the different subject matter. I mean how many books out there would even tackle the subject of voodoo and other sprituality? Yes this story is about two friends(Adele and Lucy) and their sprituality but it doesn't stop there. You find out that Adele's life is not all peaches and cream due to her irresponsible husband . You also find out that Lucy has a good relationship but is immediately sidetracked by this psychic named Kuba. This was a very daring and entertaining novel. If you're looking for the mainstream AA fiction then this book is not for you. If you want to try something different and daring then get this book.

A Spiritual Awakening,
This review is from: Colored Sugar Water: A Spiritual Tale (Hardcover)
In COLORED SUGAR WATER, Adel and Lucy are two thirty-something friends. At a first glance, they appear that they have it all. Both are good looking and successful in the business world. Adel is married and Lucy is seriously involved. However, neither Adel nor Lucy is happy.Adel is the breadwinner in her marriage. Her husband Thad tries, but not hard enough. His car is always breaking down and his business is just limping. Lucy is unhappy with her man Spencer, because he doesn't know what the word "creative" means. He lacks the gumption to try anything new. And quite frankly, Lucy is bored with him. Both are tempted by other men. Adel works with her ex-boyfriend Webster who still has feelings for her. Adel doesn't want to yield to temptation and she really wants to repair her marriage. She also knows that there is something missing from her life. Adel wants a child, but she is unsure what her husband wants. She is not spiritually connected to him. Adel wants some type of spirituality in her life. However, she is lost on how to obtain it. Lucy meets the vibrant Kuba from a psychic hotline. Lucy is not afraid of the unknown. Temptation leads her down the path of exploring her belief system. Does voodoo make sense? What about Christianity? Can one possess psychic powers? Adel then joins Lucy in the quest for a spiritual awakening. COLORED SUGAR WATER is a very different type of book. Some will scoff at it, because it contains references to voodoo and psychic powers. Others will feel that it is off the mark. However, COLORED SUGAR WATER simply gives a way for Lucy and Adel to find themselves. If you like reading literature that is different and thought provoking, you will enjoy this book.

A let down,
By "msalley02" (Middletown, New York USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Colored Sugar Water: A Spiritual Tale (Hardcover)
I don't know what Ms. Berry was thinking, but this book was a big let down. I could not understand the significance of the voodoo and the Christianity. This book raised so many questions, but left me with no answers.I don't think Ms. Berry did enough research on the two subjects to tackle such a novel. I don't think she did a good job of answering the whos, whats, whens, wheres, and hows in this book. The sadist part of it all is that I still don't know what 'Colored Sugar Water" meant in this book.

Quite a twist!,

This review is from: Colored Sugar Water: A Spiritual Tale (Hardcover)
And again, as I see from all previous reviews - "what do you believe?", which was also a line from the book. In this day and age of "fruits & nuts", I was kinda cautious about Lucy wanting to hook up with the physic hotline guy, but all that tied in with the "what do you believe?" part of the story. I admired Lucy's friend, Adel, talkig a stand in her profession, but going down the road of "preaching?"........ But this was a different read for a change, event though the twist @ the end kinda freaked me out!

Very good book. I could relate to both women at one point in my life. I know there are many women who relate to being in the middle of 2 men that they have deep emotions for, which satisfies different parts of their lives. However, they do not want to make a choice because they feel like they will be missing something if they choose one over the other. All in all, very good book, and fast read. I will definitely recommend this book to others.

A tale of two women, in search of love and fulfillment,
By R.E.A.L. Reviewers (United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Colored Sugar Water: A Spiritual Tale (Hardcover)
Lucy Merriweather and Adel Kelly have been best friends since they met in college. Both women are in the stride of midlife, and are, on the surface, successful; but each is not as happy as she could be Lucy, single, is a fitness manager for a chain of Texas health clubs. Her current steady is Spencer, a down-home guy whos well, boring. Their relationship is totally stable and secure, but not exciting for Lucy. On Adels dare, she calls one of those psychic hotlines, and meets Kuba, the Sexy Soul Psychic. On hearing his voice, Lucy feels immediately drawn to him. Kuba is mysterious, deeply spiritual and like the name says, sexy. But is Kuba all that she imagines? Who, in the end, holds the answer to the loneliness that gnaws inside of her or does she alone hold the key? Can she choose between her two lovers? Adel is married to second husband Thad. Thad is less than responsible, always working on the next big thing that never comes through, and Adel struggles with his immaturity. Frustrated at work and at home, Adel turns to her faith for answers. What will bring her the fulfillment she desires? And can Thad grow with her to fit into that picture? This is just the kind of book to read with a girlfriend. It is Adels and Lucys friendship that pulls Colored Sugar Water together. Author Berrys characters are real, and her plot involving Although I questioned some of the choices the characters make, I found myself truly absorbed by the story and rooting for Lucy and Adel all the same. I liked the strong spiritual themea spirituality that doesnt necessarily mean one religion, or point of view though the books conclusion, it seems, does weigh one over the other. A twist at the end was a nice surprisebut Im not breathing another word about it here; youll just have to read the book yourself! My only criticism was that some of the plot resolution was a little too pat, a little too quick; it would have been more effective with some forewarning Colored Sugar Water by Venise Berry is a real book about real relationships, and I recommend it for a good readand for sharing with a good friend!
