Yes, this mat does change color when pressed hard with a warm finger or hand, but the color change is so minor and the change so fleeting that I couldn't get the kids interested in it. Warm water just made a huge mess since the color change was so fleeting that the kids kept putting on more water until the floor (and their clothing) was soaked. And no one could fit the small pieces together into a bigger mat; the puzzle was too difficult for us to figure out! All in all, a real waste of money.

The mat needs a lot of pressure and warmth to change color and my kids don't have the patience to really wait for it. It is not an item they spent much time with. Unless you keep your house at 80 degrees during the winter, it takes even longer to see color changes since it is temperature based.

Like other reviewers, I note that this toy works better with a larger temperature difference. Hardly works at all in the summer, I'm afraid. However, it's pretty fun on a cool autumn day to throw the kids out on the porch with the Splat mats and a bowl of warm water. I bought it for my 2 year old, but honestly the seven and eight year old girls who were visiting had more fun with it than he did.
