Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5-Small black-and-white and full-color photographs, reproductions, drawings, and diagrams illustrate a simple text that provides basic information on the origin and history of kites. Stevens also includes instructions for constructing a wind sock and four types of kites from readily available materials. Unfortunately, there are some inconsistencies in the instructions. For example, the "Three-Stick Sled Kite" made from a large plastic bag calls for a length of plastic 16 inches long. The diagram that accompanies these instructions shows a length of plastic that measures 17 U inches. While the short sentences and plenty of white space will appeal to young readers, the crafts are too difficult for most of them to complete without adult assistance. Emery Kelly's Kites on the Wind (Lerner, 1991) provides instructions for building and flying 14 kites and is a more rounded presentation. For solid information on both the history and physics of kite flying, as well as directions for more than 15 projects, Norman Schmidt's Marvelous Mini-Kites (Sterling, 1999) is useful.
