From School Library Journal

Grade 2-3–This charming introduction to the peafowl family presents facts and color photographs in an easy-to-read format. Underwood covers what they eat, where they sleep, and how they care for their young. An outline drawing of a peafowl with the parts labeled and a map showing countries native to the species are included. An informative and enjoyable book.–Cynde Suite, Bartow County Library System, Adairsville, GA

More About the Author

Deborah Underwood grew up in Walla Walla, Washington. When she was little, she wanted to be an astronomer. Then she wanted to be a singer. Then she wanted to be a writer. Today her jobs are writing and singing. Two out of three's not bad! (Okay, she also wanted to work in a piano factory and paste the labels on new pianos, but let's just ignore that one.)

Her dad was a math professor, and her mom taught English. Her sister got all the math brains, but some of her mom's word sense rubbed off on her, thank goodness. After college, she moved to San Francisco and became a street musician. Then she worked in an office typing memos for accountants. When the accountants weren't looking, she wrote screenplays. She found that if she glowered at the computer screen and yelled, "Criminy!" once in a while, everyone thought she was typing a very demanding memo and left her alone.

In 2001, Deborah decided to start writing stories for kids. She also began writing children's nonfiction. When a publisher asks her to write a nonfiction book, she usually doesn't know much about the topic. That means she has to learn fast. Now she knows about lots of cool things, like smallpox and orangutans and Easter Island and whether or not it's okay to slurp your noodles in Japan (it is).

When she's not writing, you might find her singing in a chamber choir, playing a ukulele (very badly), walking around in Golden Gate Park, baking vegan cookies, or petting any dogs, cats, pigs, or turkeys that happen to be nearby.

4.0 out of 5 stars Peacocks: They're Not Just for NBC Anymore, February 21, 2008
At over $22 for 31 undersized pages of text and pictures (plus one page that includes an index of 7 words, and photo acknowledgments), the library binding version simply costs too much. If budget is not an issue, then go ahead and spring for this, otherwise consider the paperback.

If you're getting a book on peacocks, the illustrations had better capture the incredible design and colors of the plumage. The photos here are a mixed bag: Some feature vivid color and a truly artistic sensitibility, while a few from poor lighting and focus problems. For example, there's a beautifully balanced, vivid photo of the "eyepost" of the peacock's train feathers, and a stunning close-up of the back of the peacock's fan. This latter photo recalls Amsel Adams in its tones of black and white (the feather structure), webbed with light green plumage. Overall, however, the photos are appealing and illuminate the accompnaying text.

The book is written in simple, realtively short declarative sentences. Ms. Underwood emphasisuzes the mother-baby relationship--a natural for the target reeading group, There are also plenty of surprising facts: A female "peacock" is really called a "peahen," pea heans are not as colorful as peacocks, but can fly faster, they "roost" in the braches of trees at night (answering the inevitable "but where do bitds sleep?"), and their varied diet of grains, seeds, fruits, flowers, insects, and small reptiles! Two beautiful color drawings conclude the book: A map showing peacocks' Asiatic home (ranging from Pakistan in the West to Southeast Asis in the East), and an appropriately detailed picture illustrating the parts of a peacock's body.

The short book would be excellent for group reading, and young readers (but not absolute beginners) can try reading it on their own. With a mix of colorful pictures and interesting, fact-filled text, the book has a little something for everyone.

1.0 out of 5 stars colorful peacocks, October 10, 2011
This review is from: Colorful Peacocks (Pull Ahead Books) (Paperback)
I was very dissappointed with the book. paper thin should have cost only $1.00 or $2.00. I would not have ordered this book had I know what it really was like. I was very surprised because Amazon always provides a good product for its dollar. Not this time
