Proofs were OK - Finished book is not.,
By
This review is from: Colors in Cambridge Glass II (Hardcover)
The National Cambridge Collectors Inc. spent many hours revising the Colors book only to have the finished product not meet expectations. The proofs were fine, but when the final printing came out, the results were poor. The NCC has issued the following statement on their web site:
"The long awaited follow up to the original Colors in Cambridge Glass was released by Collector Books in the Summer of 2006. The NCC Board of Directors reviewed the product and issued the following statement at the time: "This month, Collectors Books released a new Colors of Cambridge book that was produced in concert with NCC. This is a project many members spent countless hours on, as a new book was needed - the original Colors book was no longer going to be printed. "There have been definite issues and problems in the printing process. Color reproduction that looked acceptable in the "proof stage" does not look good in the final printing. Collectors Books is aware of these concerns and is addressing them. NCC wants its members and friends to be aware of these concerns as this is not a product we are 100% satisfied with. For those members who wish to buy this product anyway, NCC is allowing members to buy it at the wholesale rate of $17.99. Non-members may buy it from us at $19.99. In all cases, we advise "buyers beware" as this is a product we do not have full confidence in."

Loved the first volume but the new one has lousy photo's. They are grainy and not what I expected from the National Cambridge Collectors. I can't figure out why they would wait so long to publish a second book and use such poor images. Very disappointed and all I can say is go to a bookstore or library and check it out for yourself BEFORE you buy it.

I liked the book because it showed a variety of Cambridge designs and colors. I was able to identify several pieces I have based on the photographs in the book. The pictures and close-ups are not the greatest, but they're good enough to be helpful in making identifications.

Excellent Information, but Low-Quality Printing,

As other reviewers have noted, the the photographs in this book rather poorly printed (other CB publications from this time period have poorly-printed photographs, too, not just the Cambridge book). That being said, the photos are still clear enough that I am able to identify the differences between several shades of Cambridge's colors, which is the main reason why I purchased the book. More importantly, the accompanying text is excellent--I have thoroughly enjoyed reading about the history of Cambridge and the background of each color. The information in this book is well-researched, thorough, and enjoyable.

Great book for the Cambridge collector,

I recently came upon a rare piece of Cambridge glass. It was a Draped Lady flower frog in Ivory made between 1926 and 1929. As I was not sure what I had but knew it was Cambridge, I purchased this book. I learned about my piece and how rare it was and, as a result, sold it on Ebay for $1500. So the book has paid for itself many times over already. It has a lot of detail so I was able to describe the piece I had with clarity and verbiage that Cambridge collectors understood to enable me to get such high bids.
