Editorial Reviews

Product Description

A brilliant set of solo performances by the late Sir Roland Hanna, one of the great
masters of solo jazz piano of the 20th century, recorded at the Performing Arts Center in
Purchase, NY on a Boesendorfer Imperial piano. Previous solo albums have received
outstanding reviews, including both four-star rating and
the extremely rare five-star rating from DownBeat.

Review

Sir Roland Hanna was one of the finest jazz pianists
to ever grace a bandstand ... Colors from a Giant s Kit
is a release of the late pianist s recordings of a variety
of compositions of his own and others. Hanna treats
the listener to an array of tunes in which his deep sense
of rhythm and melody are portrayed in a variety of
mediums ... offers a variety of styles; ballad, blues, rag,
and straight ahead jazz numbers. This CD is a joy to
listen to. Mostly for Hanna s brilliant work, but also for
the track selection itself. --JazzReview *****

Sir Roland Hanna was one of the major figures in
jazz. His diverse experience as a musician (pianist and
cellist), composer, arranger, teacher, diplomat, and
humanitarian made him a dynamic driving force in the
development of the art form. --All About Jazz

A masterpiece. --DownBeat, ****

"Colors From A Giant's Kit" is an incredible collection of fourteen original and arranged piano solos recorded by the late Sir Roland Hanna (1932-2002). Calling this music jaw-dropping is a major understatement, for both the sheer joy of playing that permeates the music and the unbelievable chops Sir Hanna possessed. Although he was always interested in jazz, the young Roland Hanna also received classical training at Juilliard and Eastman Schools of Music. Along with being a solo performer, Hanna served as Sarah Vaughn's musical director and was a regular member of The Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, among a plethora of other gigs. He composed music in many genres, often combining jazz and classical elements into a style referred to as Classical Jazz. The music on this album covers a broad spectrum of music that clearly demonstrates Hanna's versatility as well as his brilliant, unique musical vision. It is also interesting to note that Hanna was knighted in 1970 by then-President William V.S. Tubman of Liberia for humanitarian services to that country.

"Colors From A Giant's Kit" begins with the title tune, a piece that exudes joy and a playful nature as Hanna's nimble fingers dance all over the piano. Complex rhythms and harmonies send this piece soaring skyward. "Natalie Rosanne" is much more classical and subdued with a gorgeous, heartfelt melody that seems to speak of love in a hymn-like style. Next up is the 9-minute "A Story, Often Told But Seldom Heard." Deeply emotional in nature, this piece is a perfect example of Hanna's Classical Jazz. Improvised passages are woven throughout the more classical structure of the piece, telling a story of many layers and colors - an amazing piece!

This is a beautiful album from an absolute master of jazz piano (melodic, classically-skilled "jazz impressionist" subcategory). Especially recommended to lovers of classical music who've ever wondered "What is this 'jazz' thing, anyway?"

As usual, I suggest you listen to the excerpts; they should give you a much better idea than my words can of whether or not this album is for you. If it isn't, well, my condolences. (No snark intended.)

Now, if only somebody would get the rights to Hanna's "A Gift from the Magi" and get THAT out on CD...

"Colors From a Giant's Kit" is an anthology of Roland Hanna recordings that didn't make it onto the cd's they were originally intended for. That doesn't necessarily mean that they're inferior - in fact, some of the stuff here is fabulous; but since it's a mish-mash it doesn't quite hang together the way some of Hanna's other discs do. And the difference in the recorded sound from track to track is also noticeable.

While "Colors From a Giant's Kit" is an appropriate name for this collection, oddly enough the title/opening track is one of the weakest things on this disc. Its disjointed rhythm doesn't make for an auspicious beginning, especially considering how fine most of this disc turns out to be. Things settle down with the pretty Roland Hanna ballad that follows, "Natalie Rosanne," but another Hanna original, "A Story Often Told, But Seldom Heard," while clearly very ambitious, isn't very convincing. Things really turn around with an exuberant "Robbins Nest," an example of prime Roland Hanna. There are a number of other things to savor here too: distinguished readings of "Chelsea Bridge" and "Naima," along with a fine "Lush Life" and some other odds and ends. I also loved another Hanna original, "20th Century Rag."

Unlike the lead reviewer, I wouldn't necessarily recommend this disc as an introduction to Roland Hanna, but instead would first try Everything I Love or Tributaries: Reflections on Tommy Flanagan. These are among the last things Hanna recorded, but also among the best.
