An Outstanding Effort,

Not having listened to Herb Alpert for years, but always a huge fan of TJB, I purchased this CD after reading a so-so review in my local newspaper. As usual the newspaper was wrong. I find this to be an incredible, modern recording. Herb's trumpet playing is incredible, the rhythms are great. It is subtle music, but highly addictive once you let go of preconcieved notions about what it should sound like. If you are open minded and like modern, progressive jazz, it is a Must Have CD.

Herb is a genius, simply just that. Extremely underrated by many. It's unfortunate that most people don't give him credit for his versatility. He plays everything from his legendary hits with that old latin brass sound, to Salsa, to this new amazing style. I'm not sure exactly how to characterize this album, but it's a sort of urban-jazz-brass fushion. Colors is so amazing not just because it's unique, but of course it sounds beautiful. Most may note that this album has a serious increase in low-level frequencies compared to most brass albums, which only makes everything sound more spectacular altogether. This "full sound" only makes his trumpet sound more expressive against the beats. When the legendary artist in brass is still here 30 years later taking this form of music to the next level, I'm extremely impressed. Don't expect conventional brass, we know Herbs done a lot of that already. This is a far more abstract and modern creation.

The best album since "Rise". Herb sounds as fresh as in the early TJB days. This is a significant step forward compared to the old fashioned "Passion Dance" which brought nothing new. The record will probably be better as its played again and again and again....

As always each new CD offers a surprise and this one is no exception. The album almost has a disco feel to it with one cut reminding me of a song Alpert did years ago "Factory". Yet this collection of great tunes offers a "today" feel to it with several surprises for your ears. All in all a very pleasant listening experience

Herb Alpert's music is so pleasing. The Colors CD is no exception. Definitely like the special drumming on the record. The drum effects bounce very creatively off the booming bass.Nonetheless, Herb's use of the trumpet and flugelhorn is certainly creative and very tuneful. Fairly strong on the passionate side as well. Just listen to track #5 Think About It. Outside of a couple of somewhat boring tracks, this release is almost as good as his Tijuana Brass days. Give it a listen.

Going places! He should be travelling around, alone or with the Tijuana Band and have us all swoon and swing to the gorgeous music he makes with his trumpet-playing. I'll already in love with this CD because the music pieces give you already a taste of what is coming your way! Cheers! I'd love to fly with him!

This is the best record since "Rice". Herb plays more beautifully and controlled than ever.He hasn't sound fresher since the mid sixties. A big step forward compared to the "old fashioned" "Passion Dance" which brought nothing new. A few of the melodies are a little boring though.

Herb Alpert's new CD--all three of his CDs on Almo Sounds, in fact--demonstrates that he is at a creative high point in a lengthy career during which he has enjoyed remarkable success. The TJB was great, but he refuses (and rightfully so) to live in the past. "Colors" is one exciting CD!

I am still waiting for Herb to make a real Tijuanna Brass Album. His last effort was suppose to be in that vain, however I found it to be very repetative and unimaginative. This album is enjoyable with the exception of "Dorita". I liked the cover of Michael Jacksons' "Lady in my life". I think Herb is always at his best when he is recording popular songs and giving them that distinctive sound that only Herb's Trumpet can make.
