5.0 out of 5 stars GET BLOWN AWAY! AT THEIR FINEST!!!!, October 14, 2008
By
This review is from: Colors Live (Audio CD)
I just finished watching the Live DVD of this set (I have not listened to the audio only cd yet). I'll keep this short. If you want to see BTBAM in a professionally shot, great looking and sounding (though not in Dolby or DTS format unfortunately) live performance than this is it. I knew they were good and awesomely talented, but watching them pull off the entire Colors album with perfection, WITHOUT ANY BREAKS!!!, is amazing to see and hear. This is definately a must have because it's rare to see a group of people this talented play together. The only gripe I have, and this is small and many live concert dvds are guilty of this, and that is whenever there is a solo fill or some music section by a particular musician like say some really cool drum fill that'd you'd love to see Blake play, they will keep the camera on the vocalist or be panning across the stage. Maybe it's just because I'm a musician too but I like to see the player up close when they're doing something out of the ordinary. But don't get me wrong, they get up close on the guitar necks a lot so you can watch them blaze thru solos, and you get to see plenty of drums getting torn up, and the bass of course sounds great. Viridian sound beautiful. Anywho, I said I'd keep it short and I didn't Just BUY IT!

5.0 out of 5 stars An incredible live performance of a fantastic album, October 15, 2008

I find Colors to be one of the best albums of the past several years, and Between the Buried and Me to be an incredibly talented group. I've seen them live five times now including when they toured and played the whole Colors album as they do on this Cd/Dvd Combo and I must say that was one of the best shows I'd ever seen and this DVD/CD brings back the fondest of memories. Seeing this album performed whole is the way it is meant to be seen as each song flows seamlessly into the next and that the band manages to play it without breaks is a sublime achievement. If you liked the studio album even a bit, then this CD/DVD will blow you away and show BTBAM to be a virtuoso mix of performers and players.

The CD/DVD combo is also a great value. For the price of a regular CD, you get an audio copy of the performance as well as a double set DVD featuring some of their absolutely best pre-Color songs. The DVD has some pretty cool bonus features as well, as it features the full visual interpretation version of the album which runs the full length of the Colors CD as well as interpretations written by the band and fans. This is a really worthwhile product and heartily recommended if you want some incredibly technical progressive metal.

The best album of the last 10 years performed to perfection live.

I was fortunate enough to see them perform on the Colors tour, and now I can relive that amazing experience at will.

5.0 out of 5 stars BtBaM Raises the Bar, October 21, 2008
This review is from: Colors Live (Audio CD)
This CD/DVD combo is absolutely out of control. The band plays literally flawlessly, first with the 65-minute set that is Colors, without a break and without ever missing a beat. Fatigue seems to be no obstacle to this band whose supremely talented musicianship and superb songwriting reached new heights in 2007 with Colors, as they plow on seemingly unaware of how long they've been going and that they should be worn out at all.

This band doesn't have a single weakness. Dan Brigg's bass provides the perfect foundation with enough variety to be interesting at all times, and he's an energetic performer. Blake Richardson seamlessly flows between blastbeats and truly original rhythmic expression. His lack of fatigue at the end of the performance is the most physically impressive, and his writing is interesting by any drummers' standards. Dustie Waring is a phenomenal backup guitarist, certainly talented and proficient enough to lead any other given band, and he doesn't disappoint here, although he's a bit subdued onstage. Tommy Rogers commands the stage like a devilish conductor, bending the audience to his will as he belts out his powerful growled lyrics - but it's his clean singing onstage that really impresses, and the seamlessness of the transition from one to the other that's truly amazing. And the lyrics - "This is all we have / When we die" - send chills up the spine. Then there's Paul Waggonner, who's very possibly the best guitarist of our day.

And what they're playing is on the level of the players. Colors is a pounding, crushing, beautiful, epic piece, a 65-minute song start to finish that is ultimately thrilling. And the second set is pretty hot too, starting off with the classic Mordecai and running through other older stuff - the best of which includes Backwards Marathon, Ad A Dglgmut, and of course the impossible-to-ignore Selkies. If you haven't heard the solo from Selkies by now, take note. It's as life-changing as listening to a guitar part can possibly get.

And the production quality is near-perfect. The mixing's great, the sound quality is great, the video is crystal. With a few different camera angles (to highlight a few specific parts being played) it would have been perfect.

At 13 dollars? This is highway robbery. We should have to beg to only pay that much. At twice that price we'd still be getting a good deal. There's never been a more impressive metal performance, hands down. And it'll be interesting to see where they go now.

Between The Buried and Me - you will be remembered for this, is right.

Full Disclosure: I happen to think that BTBAM's Colors is one of the best, if not THE best metal albums ever recorded. Seriously. If you like the studio album, you will be blown away by the precision with which the music is performed live. Simply put, Colors is a masterpiece-and the band performs it to perfection on this live recording, without breaks, (as a previous reviewer noted) just as the album was recorded. On top of that, the quality of the recording is phenomenal. In this reviewer's opinion, Colors_Live thoroughly captures the BTBAM experience.

I have all of BTBAM's Cd's and was excited to hear that they were coming out with a DVD. I only got to see them once and missed there set another time, so this will hold me off till I see them play again. I'm glad to have a DVD to watch of there live performance which is flawless, and the audio CD is live as well. I only wish they had more songs but who doesn't. I was so happy that Shevanel Cut A Flip was in there set and of course Selkies: The Endless Obsession. I only wish that the camera would stay on target a little better with who was playing. It's a great DVD worth every penny and hope they have more tasty tunes to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars You like seeing B.T.B.A.M. Live, BUY THIS, December 31, 2008
This review is from: Colors Live (Audio CD)
This is defiantly worth the money. You get close to 2 hours of live footage. It includes the entire Colors album plus a set of 6 older songs, voted on by fans, including songs from all 3 previous albums. It honestly does a great job of demonstrating where the band came from to where they are now. Even if you're like me and you think that Colors wasn't that amazing of an album really, you should still check this out. If you enjoy seeing this band live, then you have no acceptable reason not to watch this. I'm not talking about the CD because that's pointless.
