Book Description

Black Person's Guides October 1, 2002
People of different races have been falling in love for centuries, but it has only been in the last thirty years that interracial relationships have become acceptable in society -- not to mention by local police. This book addresses the problems facing interracial couples from a black perspective. From interracial dating to marriage and child rearing, it talks frankly about racism and discrimination, deals with the disapproval of relatives, discusses the challenges of blending cultures and traditions at home, and celebrates the richness that an interracial relationship offers. Based on interviews with hundreds of biracial couples, this invaluable handbook will help black people to navigate the challenges of having a white partner.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

When it comes to relationships, there's nothing like an author who has been there and done that. An Internet columnist on interracial relationships for About.com, Hohman, an African American woman, has been married to a white man for ten years. She uses her own and other couples' stories, as well as research findings, to explore every facet of interracial romance, from the first date to the first child (including information on potential medical complications). While acknowledging possible problems, she focuses on the positive aspects of interracial love and its role in fostering race relations in America and abroad. Hohman includes an invaluable appendix of resources: organizations, people, businesses, web sites, and books. Given that the number of interracial relationships continues to grow (between 1960 and 2000, it increased 1000 percent), this resource-packed book, the latest entry in the publisher's "Black Person's Guide" series, belongs in all public libraries. 3.0 out of 5 stars A Decent First Try!!, November 26, 2002
This review is from: The Colors of Love: The Black Person's Guide to Interracial Relationships (Black Person's Guides) (Paperback)
When I first came across the title for this book I thought, "It's about time!" So, I rushed out and picked it up when it first hit the shelves. Sadly, it wasn't what I expected. First and foremost, its size....it felt more like a Jet magazine than a book. It also read much like a how-to manual as opposed to an examination into the black person's (especially black woman's) experience and perspectives w/regard to interracial relationships. This book was more of a "gloss-over"; it didn't really address topics head-on or deep enough. I would've loved a much deeper discussion of each subject and a more closer examination into the black woman's emotional journey as she encounters and enters into interracial romance. This book just didn't do its job. However, I have to give the author props. This hadn't been done before (to my knowledge); thus I commend her effort. It's a huge task to undertake. For anyone thinking of purchasing this book, my advice: purchase a used copy or by it at a discount when it hits the discount/sale rack. It doesn't hurt to have, but there's no need to rush out and get it or pay full price.

I purchased this book and I haven't read it yet but right now I am not really ready for the dating scene and I planned on reading it when I was ready to go on dates with an actual white (caucasian) male or any other type of race other than black.
