5.0 out of 5 stars A great anthology of Magic-related stories
The Colors of Magic Anthology is a great group of stories from many different authors, including Jeff Grubb (who wrote The Brother's War). There is at least one story for each color, minus artifacts, and up to three for some colors. This book showcases better authoring talent than Rath and Storm did. The stories range in mood from serious to light-hearted, although...

2.0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing
I just recently started reading the books in the Magic the Gathering realm. What sparked an interest in reading the novels is that I am a long time player of the card game. So naturally being a big fan of the game I wanted to find out if the books offered any exciting background and/or origins of the characters, items and creatures that exist in the game. 5.0 out of 5 stars A great anthology of Magic-related stories, April 13, 1999

This review is from: The Colors of Magic: A Magic: The Gathering Anthology (Magic Anthologies) (Mass Market Paperback)
The Colors of Magic Anthology is a great group of stories from many different authors, including Jeff Grubb (who wrote The Brother's War). There is at least one story for each color, minus artifacts, and up to three for some colors. This book showcases better authoring talent than Rath and Storm did. The stories range in mood from serious to light-hearted, although the mood doesn't actually match the color. Overall, from the stories in the book, any reader, a Magic player or not, should find at least two or three stories they enjoy. Personally, I enjoyed them all.

4.0 out of 5 stars a compelling antholigy of the magic the gathering universe, February 14, 1999

This review is from: The Colors of Magic: A Magic: The Gathering Anthology (Magic Anthologies) (Mass Market Paperback)
the colors of magic was a dazzling antholigy! i espesialy liked how the stories were grouped in the "magic color system" i couldn't put this book down. the only problem with the book is that it may be a bit confusing for those who haven't read the brothers war by jeff grub( which was an other great book) which is why i only gave this book four stars. on the whole it was an enjoyable trek into the magic the gathering fantasy world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magic: The Gathering --- Colors of Magic, March 5, 2000
This review is from: The Colors of Magic: A Magic: The Gathering Anthology (Magic Anthologies) (Mass Market Paperback)
This is an awesome book if you enjoy reading Magic: The Gathering. This book is composed of a number of short stories seperated into different color sections. Each section has 1-3 enchanting tales that relate to that M:TG color. All in all, it is a great book for M:TG readers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Filling, January 21, 2012

This review is from: The Colors of Magic: A Magic: The Gathering Anthology (Magic Anthologies) (Mass Market Paperback)
This is a good coalition of short stories describing how the people of the Magic universe view and use their mana. The stories span from minnutes after the brother's war, to centuries after. Great read, but a very untidy way to read up on canon material.

As far as anthologies go, this book is excellent. Much better than the other multiple-author collections set in the world of Dominaria. These stories are written by top notch authors, many of whom you'll be familiar with from other Wizards of the Coast publications. Unlike the previous anthology, Rath and Storm, the stories here are not interconnected to make a larger story. Each story is completely independent, telling a short and simple (but nonetheless good) tale of individuals living in Dominaria. The only character in the book with any ties to the other MTG novels is Feldon (from The Brothers' War). Unlike a few of the other reviewers, I didn't think any one particular story stood out as being particularly wonderful or horrible. They were all enjoyable.

Each of the stories takes place on Dominaria either immediately after, or during, the last stages of the Brothers' War. These are mostly tales of people coping with life after the devastation of the final conflict between Urza and Mishra. Changing climate, politics, and landscapes provide a great setting for these stories. For the most part, they tend toward the tragic, with often predictable outcomes leaving characters with more than they bargained for. Read these stories to get a feel for the impact of the Brothers' War on common people's lives.

Recommended for fans of MTG only.

4.0 out of 5 stars It was a realistic and fun journey into the aspects of magic, June 6, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Colors of Magic: A Magic: The Gathering Anthology (Magic Anthologies) (Mass Market Paperback)
This anthology managed to convey and differentiate between the different feelings and intentions behind and involved in the various types of magic. While not necessary to understand the stories, knowledge of the game would add to the enjoyment of the book. Not all of the stories took the same angle, some dealing with the magical doings in a circumspect way, others making it the focus and explaining the visual imagery in detail. I would recommend reading this book to anyone who is not overly concerned with continuity.

This novel being titled "The Colors of Magic", in my opinion failed to deliver any sense or explanation of the mystic powers that each color and its terrain represent. Even the stories that are to portray each color are dull and don't capture the true meaning of what each color denotes. Maybe all of this is coming from a player's perspective, but even for a fantasy novel it was a REAL SNOOZE.

This book was amazing! Every story was great! Some were very ironic and full of satire. Others were sad and even others were full of action. This book helps to explain what the colors of magic are all about. Awesome job authors!

4.0 out of 5 stars Some good, some clunkers. Overall, a very nice anthology., August 11, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Colors of Magic: A Magic: The Gathering Anthology (Magic Anthologies) (Mass Market Paperback)
Well, Magic keeps rolling down the highway of good books with its first "Anthology Anthology" (unlike the pitiful "Rath and Storm"), known as "The Colors of Magic." My perticular favorite story was Jeff Grubb's "Loran's Smile", and Feldon's quest to get Loran back by any means possible. He gives everything, but he gains much more. The clunker was the story of Black Magic, which I read three times and still did not understand. It made me want to rip those pages out of the book, so poor was the short story. Overall: Read Red, White, and Gold. Do not read: Black. Everything else is vanilla.

2.0 out of 5 stars Some good - Some bad.... overall not worth reading, June 29, 2004

This anthology, like many anthology books, is filled with various stories that are both good and bad. One big problem I had with the anthology on a whole was there was only one black story - and it was awful. While the other colors had two or three stories to balance out the different styles of play and effect the various colors could incorporate the color black was left with a very poor story. It was absolutely hideous. I can only hope the other books by Vance Moore (the author of the black story) in the magic series are a billion times better.

While my favorites were the red and white stories (white being my favorite overall) and they were worth reading, the others were only mediocre at best, and black being, well you've read the above paragraph.

Decent anthology, but not worth it to read it. I would've much rather have started the ice age cycle instead of delving into these stories that were not worth the time.
