Judge for Yourself ... Watch a Preview of the DVD Online ...,
This review is from: Colors, Shapes & Counting: Rock 'N Learn (DVD)
You can preview excerpts from this DVD online at www.rocknlearn.com. Reading a review is one thing, but seeing it for yourself BEFORE you buy is even better. You can even let your child view the excerpts and see if he/she appears interested in the DVD, which is what I did.

This is the best video that introduces COLORS & SHAPES in one. Our first was a gift but was worn out due to extreme heat. I had to get it again coz my son is badly looking for it. Libraries don't even have a copy of it. This is very upbeat, interactive, and engaging. It introduces the basic colors first and later interacts with you with some color practice. It gives your child enough time to give the answers being asked. It won't just let your child watch but even participate with the video as well. Same thing goes with shapes and numbers. They even explains how shapes differ from one another in a very hip rendition. My son truly loves this particular selection of Rock n Learn. This is their best so far. It's a fast way to learn colors, shapes and numbers in one. It sinks in well. I even find myself singing some tracks even after the video is done. But this runs pretty long. Approximately 46 minutes. So you have to cut it into 2 viewing so as not to expose your child to too much tv.

How many 3 year olds can tell you what a nanogon, octogon, or decagon is? Thanks to this movie, both my 4 year old and 3 year old know their shapes, colors, and numbers. This is one of those movies that will drive you crazy, because your kids will want to watch it every day. This DVD not only captivates your children throughout the entire show, but actively teaches the whole time. I thought my kids were just memorizing the movie without actually learning, but my children are now able to recognize various shapes outside of this movie. It does the standard square, circle, triangle shapes, but also includes ovals, ellipse, hexagon, octogon, etc. (up to 10 sided shapes). I've since bought other DVD shows made by this company, but truly nothing compares to this one. I highly recommend it for anybody with younger children.

When my first daughter was born I was firmly convinced that children learn basic colours, shapes, and counting skills through daily life. As my child grew and matured I realized that some of my assumptions were correct; my daughter learned to count verbally, most colours, and a few basic shapes through our daily interactions. As she turned six I realized that she hadn't picked up any of the symbolic representations for numbers that she was familiar with - well, okay that's a bit like learning phonics, so we'll need some structured teaching there. I also found that she was missing out on the names of a few very simple shapes - mixing up rectangles and triangles, for example - oops. My previously held notions that children never needed to be formally taught shape names blew out the window, taking some of my pride along with it.With the need for some remedial education becoming apparent, I was happy to find Rock `n Learn's Colours, Shapes & Counting educational DVD a good fit for our family. Recommended for children between the ages of three and five, my oldest doesn't find it babyish, my three-year-old is captivated, and even my one-year-old dances around the living room and points at the television when the disc is playing. Not only are the bright, simple animations and illustrations child friendly and the rock-inspired songs engaging, this disc also incorporates a true wealth of essential instruction for early education. We've found the learning value to be excellent with a very wide range of concepts introduced, reinforced and informally tested through fun games with built-in pauses for children to shout out their answers. The DVD's hosts - Rollie Roundman, Trollie Triangle, and Rockford Rectangle - introduce basic concepts before building into combinations of everything presented to date, and advanced levels within the topic areas. For example, basic colours, shapes, and numbers up to ten are introduced before children are asked questions that combine all three concepts: "How many purple circles do you see?" After mastering the basic shapes more advanced forms are introduced, as well as helpful tricks to differentiate between similar forms. The children progress all the way up to ellipses, trapezoids, polygons, and more. Intermediate colours are introduced after basic colours are familiar, and counting to 20 is practiced after the first ten numbers are well established. Most of the songs on the DVD are rock-inspired, though Rollie often employs a rhythmic jazzy-swing instructional style. Some of the songs are catchy and easy to sing along with, such as the song in "Mixing Colors," our family's favourite segment hands-down. At other times the background music accompanies rhythmic counting or verbal instruction. The easy to use navigational menu makes it easy for parents to zero in on specific lessons for review if they don't need their children to work through the entire 46-minute disc. As an owner of a variety of educational DVDs, I'm impressed by the amount of information effectively conveyed in Colors, Shapes & Counting. The continuous integration of colours, shapes, and counting as the disc progresses, counting shapes, then asking for the colour, stating the colour then counting and asking for the shape name, and so on, provide thorough review and practice. Now my six-year-old can identify trapezoids with ease. She still needs a bit more practice with her triangles and rectangles (I think the similarity in suffix is confusing for her), but we're well on our way. A video sample can be viewed online at the Rock `n Learn website. Lessons Included: 1. Meet Rollie 2. Colors All Around 3. Basic Colors 4. Color Practice 5. Learn Our Shapes 6. Shapes Are All Around Us 7. What Color Is It? 8. Name That Shape 9. Music Helps Us Count to 5 10. Zero 11. Mixing Colors 12. Counting Up to 10 13. How Many Shapes? 14. So Many Shapes 15. So Many Colors 16. The Ellipse 17. Diamonds and Squares 18. Four Cool Shapes 19. Polygons 20. Polygon Song 21. Let's Count to 20 22. Fun Time Quiz

My 2-year old son loves it! It is entertaining education for him. He has been watching the series from "My Baby Can Read" since he turned a year old. Nothing could take their place until I bought the Rock'N Learn Colors, Shapes & Counting. I even learned a couple of things. What I like about it most is that their presentation of each concept builds on the previously introduced concept. There is also good repetition - not the kind that can drive you batty. Another thing I love about this DVD is how it transitions to the next concept and then brings everything presented together. I think this would be an awesome addition to every pre-schooler's dvd collection.

I have two younger children with Autism who tested in less than the bottom 1% in their age group. It was devestating to say the least. To make matters worse I was told that they were mentally retarded and that I should institionalize them. After dealing with my own emotional recovery, I put everything I could into proving that my children could learn and being productive members of society. Besides, ABA and Speech therapy, I regually showed them educational videos as part of there education including My Baby Can Read and many in the Rock and Learn Series which they soaked up. Mind you, I just don't throw my kids in front of the TV and make them watch DVDs all the time, but let's face it -- unless your supermom, it's nice to have a distraction for your child and this is guilt free as your kid is actually learning SOMETHING. This video kept their attention and taught them their colors and shapes to the point that they became way AHEAD of other children academically. I can't recommend the Rock and Learn series enough. It taught shapes that I would have probably never dared to introduce my child too for their age group. My children not only learned circles, ovals, rectangles, squares and more, but also hexagons and heptagons. My 3 year old even corrected me on rhombus and trapezoid. Go figure!
