Interesting historical information, May 4, 2009
This review is from: Colors: What They Mean and How to Make Them (Hardcover)
I found this book to be very interesting in it's coverage of the significance of colors in various cultures and over different time periods. The illustrations were good and of a high quality. The person above gave a bad review because they had very specific needs but as a general survey of color and it's uses this is an interesting book.

Not as good as expected, July 15, 2007
This review is from: Colors: What They Mean and How to Make Them (Hardcover)
My usual practice in purchasing art books is to look at a library copy first to be sure I really need it for my personal collection. I purchased this book because it got a favorable notice in Art News and I couldn't get it easily through my library, but I wish I'd waited. The historical information is moderately interesting but presented in a hodge podge manner. The information on how to make colors is not useful. I am particularly interested in using fabric dyes and I find the "recipes" that are given are unusable since they give proportions of ingredients but not the weight of the fiber those ingredients will dye. The illustrations are okay.
