Book Description

A Cornish Mystery June 8, 2010
“Adept at showing character through witty dialogue, Dunn paints an amusing picture of a small town that readers will want to visit again soon.” —Publishers Weekly on Manna From Hades

Eleanor Trewynn is a recently retired widow who has moved to the small village of Port Mabyn in Cornwall. Neither frail nor retiring, after a lifetime of traveling the world, she’s ready for an uneventful life with her dog and friends in this quiet town. Unfortunately, excitement seems to happen around her.

Her friend and neighbor, artist Nick Gresham, returns from a trip only to find several of his paintings slashed, reportedly by rival local artist Geoffrey Clarke. When Nick goes to have it out with him, with Eleanor in tow, they find Clarke’s body in his studio, fatally stabbed in the back. Accused of the crime, Nick ends up in jail, while Detective Inspector Scumble and DSMegan Pencarrow, Eleanor’s niece, investigate. But Eleanor isn’t leaving anything to chance—she starts doing a little investigating of her own, and soon learns that Nick is far from the only one with a compelling motive for murder.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Once again murder disrupts the quiet life of widowed charity shop owner Eleanor Trewynn, who's settled in the village of Port Mabyn with her Westie, Teazle, in British author Dunn's delightful second cozy set in 1960s Cornwall (after 2009's Manna from Hades). On returning from a train trip to London, Eleanor's artist friend and neighbor, Nick Gresham, discovers that someone has slashed several of his paintings in his Port Mabyn shop. Rather than go to the police, a furious Nick sets out to confront rival artist Geoffrey Monmouth, who Nick is sure is the culprit. Accompanied by an anxious Eleanor, Nick finds Geoff stabbed to death in his Padstow bungalow. When the authorities detain Nick, Eleanor determines to track down the real killer, who just might be one of the young artists living communally on a local farm. Bolstered by strong characters, the fast-moving plot builds to a satisfying conclusion. (June)

From Booklist

Fans of Simon Brett's Fethering mysteries, in which a woman retired from a position of influence seeks a simple life in a picturesque village but keeps finding dead bodies instead, should like the second in Dunn's Cornish mystery series (the first was Manna from Hades, 2009). Eleanor Trewynn has spent years all over the globe, helping the poor through an organization called the London Committee to Save the Starving. Widowed and ready to roost back home, she settles into a fictional village in Cornwall. This time out, murder enters her life yet again when a young artist, neighbor, and friend, Nick Gresham, returns from a trip to discover that his studio has been broken into, sculptures broken, and paintings slashed. Gresham is convinced a jealous local artist destroyed his work. He rushes to the artist's studio only to find him stabbed in the back. Suspicion falls on Gresham, and, predictably, Eleanor works with the local police and her detective-sergeant niece to clear him. Worn plot lines and a bit fey in the writing, but wonderful Cornish and cozy atmosphere carry the day. --Connie Fletcher

4.0 out of 5 stars pleasant reading, but..., June 30, 2010

This review is from: A Colourful Death: A Cornish Mystery (Hardcover)
Like its predecessor, the second book in the Cornish series by Carola Dunn is a pleasant read, with nice characters, interesting setting and good writing. What lacks is a plausible mystery solution. I find it frustrating when I can identify the murderer at the death scene; I want more from a mystery than well-written dialogue. If Carola Dunn could plot this series as well as she does her Daisy Dalrymple books, it would make for a great new series.

1.0 out of 5 stars transparent plot, June 25, 2010
By
This review is from: A Colourful Death: A Cornish Mystery (Hardcover)
The story takes place in present day fictional village Port Mabyn on the north coast of Cornwall. It is a cozy and amusing story, with lots of tea and lots of pasties. The characters are realistic except for the murderer.

The first corpse is found on page 26, and by page 28 whodunit is obvious. Also there are certain threads that are begun but not followed through. Very disappointing.

1.0 out of 5 stars A Disappointment, June 25, 2010
This review is from: A Colourful Death: A Cornish Mystery (Hardcover)
This book was a big disappointment. I enjoyed the first book in this series, & was looking forward to the second. This book is dull & predictable - the killer is obvious very early on, & there is no suspense built up, or alternate solutions to the murder developed. The book is also constructed in that annoying tennis match style of alternating short chapters following two different perspectives on the murder; I had whiplash from being jerked back & forth. This book is altogether too predictable & tedious.
