Book Description

September 1999
Far away from the Taj Mahal, the Red Fort and other tourist destinations of the north of India lies another India: the lush and beautiful Southern States. In Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Goa, brilliantly coloured hues are a natural result of a hot climate and fertile landscape, but they are also symbolic of what is one of the world's most spiritual countries. In these pages, blue is for both Vishnu and brilliantly coloured saris, red is for Lakshmi and blazing hot chillies, yellow is for good luck and golden tumeric, and green is for Hanuman and vibrant rice fields. Swaying palms and garlands of flowers, painted bullock carts and caparisoned elephants - these are but a few examples of Barbara Lloyd's photographs.

4.0 out of 5 stars A visual feast, June 15, 2000
This review is from: The Colours of Southern India (Paperback)
A lovely feast for the eyes in a small-ish paperback book. There is very little text or explanation, but if you would like to revel in the rich hues of south India, you will probably enjoy this book. This is a photographic work rather than a travel guide. The book is divided into sections by color. I wish there had been more descriptions of the images.

4.0 out of 5 stars Colors galore, July 14, 2000

This review is from: The Colours of Southern India (Paperback)
I have a large collection of India photographic books. It was a good idea to focus on color. The colors of India are magnificent and Barbara Lloyd has captured them nicely. I was disappointed that there was no mention of what equipment, technique or even what film was used.

1.0 out of 5 stars blatant glorification, November 22, 2000
By

This review is from: The Colours of Southern India (Paperback)
i have been to the south of india before, as a tourist and as a photographer. this book was really disapointed me because of the blatant explotation of the people in the book, india already has an identity, by dressing these people up and setting up the shots as she has, she is renforceing the sterotypical western preconceptions of this nation, forcing an identity on the country which is not its self representation.
