This book was obviously intended for the skilled gunsmith/metalworker with an interest in the Model 1911 and 1911A1 autoloading pistol designed by John Browning. However, it has utility for those who do not fall into that category, but have an interest in that family of handguns.
The skilled gunsmith will find everything he needs to know about reparing, refurbishing, and customizing the 1911, including a section on accuracy and another on specialized tools.
The enthusiast will find good information about what modifications to the 1911 will be worth his while - be his interest in defense or competition.
This book is a well thought out approach to 1911 gunsmithing and makes a great reference for anyone who owns or works on 1911s.

...and no fluff to fill out pages.

This is what I was looking for - exactly how to work on the gun to get desired results and/or correct problems. I am not a gunsmith, but this book is invaluable to me because I like to know the technical side of my gun. I can do some customizing/repair on my own by reading the book, but if I have to let a gunsmith do the work, at least I will now know what is involved and what will be done.

Make no mistake - this is a gunsmith shop manual and not a 'polished' review or history of the 1911. (That information is for other books). This book is a WONDERFULLY illustrated hands on how-to (assuming you have the skills and tools). But using this as a reference manual will allow any shooter to understand how his gun works and what will make it better.

I plan on getting Volume 2 very soon, along with a few other of Kuhnhausen's books about guns that I own or that I am interested in.

Here at Amazon they don't seem to have too many of Kuhnhausen's books in stock, so I will not think it is unethical to recommend ordering the book from Brownell's if you can't order it here and want this book. And if you own a 1911 (and are interested in the technical details about the operation/repair of your gun) you WILL want this book.

This book and the companion to it "The US. M1911/M1911A1 Pistol & Commercial M1911 type Pistols A Shop Manual" are excellent sources of information on the 1911 pistol design.

The information and illustrations in this book are top notch. This book has some of the most complete information on maintaining the M1911 series of pistols found anywhere. You will not regret owning this book.

IMPORTANT NOTE!!! Like the all the other books in the Kuhnhausen series of shop manuals, this book is still in print by by the original publisher Heritage Gun Books and they are sold at reasonable prices from $29 to $45 each depending on the book.

Do not be ripped off by scammers selling the books as rare or out of print!

Useful shop manual for those who do not have an extensive background in the 1911. Exceeds military TMs and is very useful in diagnosing and repairing any problems that may arise.

Quite comprehensive and easy reading, clear illustrations and instructions to modify/accurize the .45 Colt mod 1911.
It is a must read for shooters of this particular firearm. It definitively is the ultimate book in this genre, I recommend it
