Awesome bag! UPDATE 3/18/2010,

UPDATE 3/18/2010:
I used this to get through our recent power outage. The house was 40 degrees and I stayed warm (as long as I kept my head tucked in) and relatively comfortable. I also want to note that the memory foam area at the top has stayed pretty well. I would GLADLY get another one, but the construction of this bag is so strong that I think this is going to last a LONG time. I bought one of these for myself, and a different one for my son for a camping trip we took. This thing is warm. At night it was about 50 degrees and I had to open it up a bit. This is not a bad thing, and I wasn't about to buy 2 different bags. Opening the bag makes it quite comfortable and I highly recommend it. It rained all night when we were out, and while we were in a tent, and we had pads, I was pretty comfortable and slept very well. A little background...I hadn't gone camping in over 25 years....ehem. My son was dying to go, and I used to love it. I was thinking it was a big mistake. It wasn't. We had a great time, and the bag is great. The only negatives I can give is that it is a little tough to wrap it back up, and mostly, it's heavy. I know 3.5 lbs. doesn't seem like a lot, but it all adds up. I thought it was 1 lb., but I misread, and it is 1 lb. of thermalC fill. If you don't think that you will need a thirty degree bag, save the weight and buy a lighter bag. I know there are lighter 30 degree bags, but I haven't tried them, and I don't know how warm they will keep you. This one should easily keep you warm. At the gold box price, this is a great deal. Construction is very good, and it doesn't feel like it will rip/tear easily. It's nice and long, I'm 5'11" and I have plenty of legroom.

I am just barely 6' and have very broad shoulders. I can fit in this bag. I figured I would have more trouble laterally fitting in a mummy bag, but actually it was my height that was the tightest fit in this bag. I still like it, but if you are over 6', look elsewhere.

Love the sleeping bag but broke first time I compressed it.,
This review is from: Columbia Adventure Quest II Light Duty Mummy Sleeping Bag (Sports)
This sleeping bag was everything I wanted for my 65 mile hike. Light, small and warm. I got it from UPS and was so excited that I had finally had the chance to check it out and it fit very well. I am 5'5 and was even a little long for me. I put it back into the sack and the compression straps broke when I was trying to compress the bag down. This was the first time that I had compressed the bag. I was very upset due to fact that I am leaving on my hike within two weeks but Amazon fixed the problem immediately and my replacement should be here in a week, right before I leave. I know products can be defective and I am not knocking the bag, I just wish this hadn't happened and I will be keeping a close eye on my new bag.

Light and comfortable bag,

Recently bought this bag because I was tired lugging around my heavy rectangle bag for backpacking. Was hesitant to get another mummy bag as I'm 6'3" with broad shoulders and like to toss around a bit, but weight was the main issue here and I was willing to sacrifice for it. Bag is very small and light when it's compressed, I saw someone say it was heavy but I wouldn't call 3.5 lbs heavy. I dunno maybe it's caused I'm used to lugging around my big one. I've also seen people say the compression sack was garbage and the stitching on the straps broke with light usage. Again, don't know if those folks got a dud or if they just don't know what light usage entails. Mine was just fine and the straps appeared to be quite sturdy, I compressed it just fine.
Now on to sleeping in the bag itself. The Micro-denier liner is soft and a big step up from slick polyester, this alone makes it worth it to me as I hate the regular poly liners. My 6'3" frame fit in the bag with plenty of room to cinch the hood around my head. Of course it's tighter towards the bottom, which I assume all mummies are, you just have to get used to turning over and the whole bag moving with you instead of turning on your side within a regular sized bag. I couldn't get my arms inside as my shoulders are too broad but it didn't really bother me since I wouldn't be using it in weather where my dual layers wouldn't be enough. I'm not an expert on the mummy bag so I'm not certain if you're supposed to be able to get your arms completely in there. I can't imagine one out there big enough to fit my large frame in completely, at least not for a person on a budget like me. The temp stayed around 34 or so where I used it this weekend and I felt fine with a thermal layer and then a sweatshirt, wool socks and pants but at one point in the night it dropped to 32-31 and I felt a tad chilly. It's rated to 30 but I would probably throw a small fleece blanket over myself if I ever end up in that temp range again. Sometimes the temp you're comfortable with using it in is personal preference. One reviewer said he was freezing in 40 degree weather with two layers whereas I would have been toasty. So just use your best judgment as far as that. All in all I can't really find any complaints with this bag and I'm glad for the purchase.

Great Bag for the Price,

I bought this sleeping bag for a camping trip to northern Minnesota in the middle of October, the low was in the 20's. At that frigid temperature the bag did not keep me warm, but it did an admirable job considering it was only $40. The compression bag makes storing it a breeze and the bag itself is super light. I'm 5'6" and the bag had plenty of room. In fact, I liked the bag so much I'm getting one for my sister for Christmas. I'm sure there are better bags on the market, but I think you would be hard pressed to find one of this quality at this price.
Update: I went camping over Memorial day weekend (5/27/11) in southeastern Minnesota (the second time I've used the bag outdoors, I'm not a big camper). The low was in the 40's and the bag did not keep me warm. I still appreciate the bag's lightness and storability, but will not be using it outside again.

Great Introduction to a Better Bag,

This bag represents a great introduction to a mummy bag. As a replacement for a rectangle bag, this retains heat and provides better protection to cold than expected. It packs down to a very manageable size, about a third of what you'd expect from a regular rectangle sleeping bag. The quality of construction seems to match well to the price paid - this will not last forever, however I do expect to get several seasons' use out of it. Use suggests that 30 degrees may be a stretch, however I can definitely expect 40 degree use comfortably. Overall, a good bag if you intend to do some cool-weather camping.

I purchased this Columbia sleeping bag to use backpacking and it has met all my expectations. It is very lightweight, comfortable and packs up well. It's a GREAT alternative for those not wanting to spend $100+ for a quality sleeping bag.

The bag it's self is very tight. I'm a small person, and it is tight on me. But it is very warm so just unzip it and you have space and good temperature. It's not ultra-compact, but it packs down very compactly, and is light. Good for a weekend backpacking trip, or longer.

I agree with previous reviewers. This sleeping bag should not be rated to 30*. It is a great summer camping sleeping bag, but I wouldn't use it if it's cold at night, even down to 45*. My son took this to camp. They had a power outage and then the air conditioning didn't get reset until the next morning. He said he was FREEZING that night with this sleeping bag. This bag does stuff down to a VERY small size, smaller than or 0* bags, so it is easy to carry on a backpack, etc. Nice shape.

So-so sleeping bag,

Sleeping bag was not as comfortable as I expected, very small and thin, you definably need some kind of a mattress or mat to lay on. Not as warm as advertise, make sure you have some heavy socks and layer in multiple clothings item - I learn the hard way :-).
Bottom line, if you have a small body frame and temperatures are above 50 degrees and you have a good mat or air mattress to lay on - this bag is ok... otherwise spend another $50 and get yourself something better... |
