Jonathan Chaves makes available a vast store of rich and significant poems by both major and minor poets from China's last three dynasties. Featured are poems from the Yuan dynasty, which range from quiet landscape depictions to expansive, freely expressive works; from the Ming era, notable for its stylistic quality and its diversity; and from tte Ch'ing dynasty, known for poets who, by refusing to fit into any category, helped continue the fascinating richness of late Ming cultural life. Annotated with biographical sketches of the poets and illustrated with their paintings, this collection is an unprecedented anthology of exceptionally well translated Chinese poetry up to the twentieth century.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent collection of Chinese poetry, January 7, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: The Columbia Book of Later Chinese Poetry (Paperback)
This, one of two related anthologies of Chinese poetry, is an excellent overview of some of the best Chinese poems. There is a wide selection of different styles of poems from different authors. The only complaints are that the original Chinese is not printed, and there are few poems by women authors.

3.0 out of 5 stars Why Wade-Giles?, July 31, 2010

This review is from: The Columbia Book of Later Chinese Poetry (Paperback)
I haven't read this book but can see from what's presented here that the book's editors and publishers are still using the Wade-Giles system of transcription of Chinese. At this stage of the game with pinyin having been the standard at least since the 1980's, why are they still using the Wade-Giles system?

TAI earned his chin-shih degree and briefly held office under the Sung dynasty (960-1279), but with the accession to power of the Mongol Yuan dynasty, he went into retirement, supporting himself by accepting students and selling his own writings-a practice rare in earlier periods but increasingly common in late Sung and Yuan. Read the first page
