Product Description

Take the whole family camping in roomy style with Columbia's Gardner Peak dome-style tent, which comfortably sleeps up to 10 people. It provides a heady 84-inch center height and features a 1200 millimeter double-coated fly, sealed seams, and a polyethylene tub floor. The reflective zipper pulls make it easy to get in and out of the tent - even in the dark. It comes with a strong hybrid frame system, mixing both steel and fiberglass poles, and a wheeled carry bag with instructions sewn into the bag so they'll never get lost.

The tent includes two remote-controlled lights (with a 65-foot reach) that attach easily for exceptional nighttime security and visibility. Keep glasses, a flashlight and other necessities within an arm's reach with the two handy storage lockers inside the tent. The Clean Sweep zippered floor flap makes it easy to sweep out debris. Other features include a quick-release buckle system, two hanging cup holders, and a removable door mat.

The tent's venting system creates a vortex that flushes hot air up through the roof, providing fresh air all night long. For maximum climate control, open or close the lower vents to feel the cool night breeze or keep warm air in. The Gardner Peak features the GoBe Dry Ultimate Rain Protection System, which combines patent pending fabric, component, and seam technology that culminates in exceptional protection from the elements, in particular rain, in any and all terrain. The DryTek Fabric repels moisture with a protective coating. The DryFloor Tub design elevates the floor seams to keep away water, while the DryGuard Skirt deflects rain from the floor seams and stake loops.

About Columbia Sportswear
Founded in 1938, Columbia Sportswear Company has grown from a small family-owned hat distributor to one of the world's largest outerwear brands and the leading seller of ski-wear in the United States. Columbia's extensive product line includes a wide variety of outerwear, sportswear, rugged footwear and accessories. Columbia specializes in developing innovative products that are functional yet stylish and offer great value. Eighty-year-old matriarch Gert Boyle, Chairman of the Board, and her son, Tim Boyle, President and CEO, lead the company.

Columbia's history starts with Gert's parents, Paul and Marie Lamfrom, when they fled Germany in 1937. They bought a small hat distributorship in Portland, Oregon, and named it Columbia Hat Company, after the river bordering the city. Soon frustrated by poor deliveries from suppliers, the Lamfroms decided to start manufacturing products themselves. In 1948, Gert married college sweetheart Neal Boyle, who joined the family business and later took the helm of the growing company. When Neal suddenly died of a heart attack in 1970, Gert enlisted help from Tim, then a college senior. After that, it wasn't long before business really started to take off. Columbia was one of the first companies to make jackets from waterproof/breathable fabric. They introduced the breakthrough technology called the Columbia Interchange System, in which a shell and liner combine for multiple wearing options. In the early 1980s, then 60-year-old Gert began her role as "Mother Boyle" in Columbia's successful and popular advertising campaign.

The company went public in 1998 and moved into a new era as a world leader in the active outdoor apparel industry. Today, Columbia Sportswear employs more than 1,800 people around the world and distributes and sells products in more than 50 countries and to more than 12,000 retailers internationally.

Selecting a Tent
Fortunately, there are all kinds of tents for weekend car campers, Everest expeditions, and everything in-between. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Expect the Worst
In general, it's wise to choose a tent that's designed to withstand the worst possible conditions you think you'll face. For instance, if you're a summer car camper in a region where weather is predictable, an inexpensive family or all purpose tent will likely do the trick--especially if a vehicle is nearby and you can make a mad dash for safety when bad weather swoops in! If you're a backpacker, alpine climber or bike explorer, or if you like to car camp in all seasons, you'll want to take something designed to handle more adversity.

Three- and Four-Season Tents
For summer, early fall and late spring outings, choose a three-season tent. At minimum, a quality three season tent will have lightweight aluminum poles, a reinforced floor, durable stitching, and a quality rain-fly. Some three-season tents offer more open-air netting and are more specifically designed for summer backpacking and other activities. Many premium tents will feature pre-sealed, taped seams and a silicone-impregnated rain-fly for enhanced waterproofness.

For winter camping or alpine travel, go with a four season model. Because they typically feature more durable fabric coatings, as well as more poles, four-season tents are designed to handle heavy snowfall and high winds without collapsing. Of course, four-season tents exact a weight penalty of about 10 to 20 percent in trade for their strength and durability. They also tend to be more expensive.

Domes and Tunnels
Tents are broadly categorized into two types, freestanding, which can stand up on their own, and those that must be staked down in order to stand upright. Freestanding tents often incorporate a dome-shaped design, and most four-season tents are constructed this way because a dome leaves no flat spots on the outer surface where snow can collect. Domes are also inherently stronger than any other design. Meanwhile, many three-season models employ a modified dome configuration called a tunnel. These are still freestanding, but they require fewer poles than a dome, use less fabric, and typically have a rectangular floor-plan that offers less storage space than a dome configuration. Many one and two-person tents are not freestanding, but they make up for it by being more lightweight. Because they use fewer poles, they can also be quicker to set up than a dome.

Size Matters
Ask yourself how many people you'd like to fit in your fabric hotel now and in the future. For soloists and minimalists, check out one-person tents. If you're a mega-minimalist, or if you have your eye on doing some big wall climbs, a waterproof-breathable bivy sack is the ticket. Some bivy sacks feature poles and stake points to give you a little more breathing room. Also, if you don't need bug protection and you want to save weight, check out open-air shelters.

Families who plan on car camping in good weather can choose from a wide range of jumbo-sized tents that will accommodate all your little ones with room to spare. A wide range of capacities is also available for three- and four-season backpacking and expedition tents. Remember, though, the bigger the tent you buy, the heavier it will be, although it's easy to break up the tent components among several people in your group. It's also helpful to compare the volume and floor-space measurements of models you're considering.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Nice, April 13, 2006
This review is from: Columbia Gardner Peak Ten-Person Cabin Dome Tent (Sports)
SIZE: ROOM AVAILABLE:
We purchased this for family camping. We have four boys ages 2-11 and my husband is 6'2" . He can stand up easily, with head room and there is plenty of room for all of us.

Parent's Side: We have 2 King size cots set up along the sides, with plenty of storage room under them for the things we don't want the boys getting into and plenty of walking and changing room left on that side.

The kids side: plenty room for all four to sleep, and if desired, plenty or room for a queen air mattress, and you can just stand it up during the day to get it out of your way.

And if its raining, there is plenty of room for our chairs and a card table to eat or play games. Even with the cots, etc.

AIR FLOW
Yes the cyclone vents work. It was hot outside, but we set up in the shade, and the cyclone vents and all the screens helped keep the air flow going and kept it cooler (not cold, but cooler than any other tent I have experienced and it was comfortable). And there was air flow at night, so we slept better. You did not get the hot, stifling heat feeling or musty smells at all.

ZIPPERS
The zippers did get caught in the fabric, which was easily fixable, by gentally squeezing them shut more so the fabric wouldn't get caught underneath.

RAIN/WIND
Not 100% rain proof in full storm, but I have yet to see a tent that is...without paying a heck of a lot more money. Small leaks at door zippers, laid a towel down at each side, had no problem. Again, better than any tent I've had before, and it stayed put in the wind (but of course we had it staked and tied down. Don't know about hail...haven't had that experience (thankfully)

THE EXTRAS
lights and cargo room - very nice! You have to buy the batteries for the lights and they aren't regular batteries, and they aren't cheap, but I read a review that said customer service would mail the batteries for free if desired...don't know, didn't try, I just paid for the batteries. Gives plenty of light from the ceiling down, so the light is well spread out as well, and the lights are remote controlled, so everyone can get into bed and then you can turn them off!

EASE TO SET UP
After the intial set up it took us (2 people) 15-20 minutes to set it up and take it down.)

Intial set up takes more time...and make sure you aren't rushing.

The directions are not the best...first set up we broke the top pole. This was our fault, we were setting it up rushed because the sun was going down and we were setting it up wrong and didn't take the time to fully understand all the directions. So we were forcing the poles to bend more than they had too, causing them to break.

The instructions for set up are across for the parts page. The instructions are not very clear and easy to follow. The picture you need to fully understand the directions is on the BACK of the instructions. We didn't find these until after we had broken the pole. And in all honesty they need to be side be side, so you can reference the picture while reading the instructions.

Even with the broken pole we just ducttaped it and were still able to set it up and camp.

CUSTOMER SERVICE
I called customer service, and they were fantastic! They express shipped me new poles...free of charge (I didn't pay for the poles or the shipping) and they didn't give me any hassle at all!

4.0 out of 5 stars Columbia Gardner Tent, October 13, 2005
By
This review is from: Columbia Gardner Peak Ten-Person Cabin Dome Tent (Sports)
Pros: in general a well-designed tent that has a huge floor area of 18x10ft. You can easily stand anywhere in this tent. Lots of venting in the roof and walls makes this a cool tent even in hot weather. In heavy rain the fly sheet does a great job, water just runs off of it. Very easy to put up and take down. 1 person can do either task in about 20mins, 2 people can shorten this time to 15mins.

Cons: our tent leaked even in moderate rain at multiple points around the tent, I think primarily the zippers. In a 0.7" rain in 24 hours we had 8 seperate leak areas and approximately a couple of cups of water in total entered the tent. Most of the zippers on our tent were not of good quality and showed signs of damage when we 1st put it up. Also the rain flaps that cover the zippers require a lot of care to not catch them in the zippers. I didn't like the partition that you can fasten to divide into 2 rooms, it had large gaps between the walls and floor so was only semi-private in my opinion.

On reflection after reading alot of Columbia Tent reviews, I think we got a lemon and that our experience is not typical. I'm going to return this tent and exchange it for a Columbia Cougar Flats in the hope that I get one that can be easily sealed with seam sealer and then be waterproof :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Nice BIG Tent!, March 20, 2006
This review is from: Columbia Gardner Peak Ten-Person Cabin Dome Tent (Sports)
I bought this Tent after reading the first reviewers write-up.

When it finally arrived, the rain was threatening. That would not stop me, so, I set it up in the living room (YUP!)WOW! It was a truely awesome site to see, it practically took-up our eniter living room. We were all very excited, because Spring Break was right around the corner. As stated by other reviews, it has plenty of room for all. In fact we were able to fit three (3) Queen size blow-up matresses side-by-side, with three(3) feet to spare by the door and nearly three by the wall.

I will also have to agree with a reviewer that the Door zippers need adjusting. The rain-flap kept getting caught in the zipper. I was so enraged that I came close to cutting it off. At one point the zipper was not even binding the two together. I calmed down, used my trusty Leatherman and made slight adjustments to it (squeezing down on it). Problem solved

Pro's- Very BIG Tent for all your needs....
Con's- Very Big Tent, you need a big campsite for this BAD BOY..
Zippers on the Door's (Flap's need to be bigger)

Tip's: Buy a Heavy Duty Tarp for under-protection
Take an extra Tent for your gear (not food)

Enjoy!
