Product Description

Who couldn't use an extra jacket you can stow in the glove compartment? The Cougar Flats Jacket from Columbia Sportswear, with its trendy color-blocked body and radial sleeves, may seem way too substantial, but it actually folds into a its own front pocket. HydroPel Plus, a cotton-like fabric with a soft and supple feel, is wind and rain repellent. The hidden hood with drawcord and side-entry zip pockets offer extra protection for the head and hands. This is the ultimate lightweight jacket that couldn't be handier to pack.

About Columbia Sportswear
Founded in 1938, Columbia Sportswear Company has grown from a small family-owned hat distributor to one of the world's largest outerwear brands and the leading seller of ski-wear in the United States. Columbia's extensive product line includes a wide variety of outerwear, sportswear, rugged footwear and accessories. Columbia specializes in developing innovative products that are functional yet stylish and offer great value. Eighty-year-old matriarch Gert Boyle, Chairman of the Board, and her son, Tim Boyle, President and CEO, lead the company.

Columbia's history starts with Gert's parents, Paul and Marie Lamfrom, when they fled Germany in 1937. They bought a small hat distributorship in Portland, Oregon, and named it Columbia Hat Company, after the river bordering the city. Soon frustrated by poor deliveries from suppliers, the Lamfroms decided to start manufacturing products themselves. In 1948, Gert married college sweetheart Neal Boyle, who joined the family business and later took the helm of the growing company. When Neal suddenly died of a heart attack in 1970, Gert enlisted help from Tim, then a college senior. After that, it wasn't long before business really started to take off. Columbia was one of the first companies to make jackets from waterproof/breathable fabric. They introduced the breakthrough technology called the Columbia Interchange System, in which a shell and liner combine for multiple wearing options. In the early 1980s, then 60-year-old Gert began her role as "Mother Boyle" in Columbia's successful and popular advertising campaign.

The company went public in 1998 and moved into a new era as a world leader in the active outdoor apparel industry. Today, Columbia Sportswear employs more than 1,800 people around the world and distributes and sells products in more than 50 countries and to more than 12,000 retailers internationally.

4.0 out of 5 stars So what if its raining?, April 18, 2005

This review is from: Columbia Men's Cougar Flats Jacket (Apparel)
My husband and I both got one of these coats for hiking on wet days in Seattle. The crimson comes with dark blue/almost black accents. The Aspen colors are muted olive/sage and black. We wore these coats on a hike where we not only got rained on, we got hailed on! I liked the design of the hood. It gives good coverage without blocking too much side vision. It rolls up into the collar and zips out of sight when not needed. Cords at the hood and waist draw tight to block out the wind. There are ample pockets, both inside and out, one of which doubles as a zip up pouch into which the entire coat can be rolled. The sleeves are a little long and wide for a woman, but actually this came in handy when I wanted other layers underneath. We stayed quite dry, except for some spots on the upper chest area where either the seam (between the accent colors) or the Columbia logo allows for leakage. The sleeve seams did not appear to leak. I'd recommend some light gloves, as my hands were cold and clammy in the pockets, which are lined with the same water repellant material as the coat. Despite the vents in the shoulderblade area, this coat will not breathe enough to double as a windbreaker on a dry day. But if you don't want to let a grey, rainy day keep you inside, or want to be prepared for an unexpected shower by keeping it in your pack, this is a great choice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wind & Water Proof!, April 5, 2009
By
Islandgolfer (Thousand Oaks, CA) - See all my reviews
This jacket is totally wind and water proof, to the extent that it does not allow air in or out. As a result, you sweat in it. It can get very hot and clammy if the sun is out, at all. But, it will definitely keep the rain and wind out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this jacket!, August 26, 2007

I absolutely love this jacket. A number of years ago I purchased a similar Eddie Bauer version and there is no comparison. The Columbia jacket is lightweight but feels 'substantial', looks great, and wears well.
