I don't have to endure sub-zero temperatures like one of the other reviewers, however this jacket did do well enough for me when I wait for the persistently late buses when it is in 20s, windy, and snowy in the pre-dawn hours. I should note, that I am a cold-adverse person and it's been good so far.

Length-wise, I consider this more of a coat than a jacket even though it doesn't have as much of a skirt. The extra bit of tail to cover the butt is nice and doesn't get in the way when sitting.

Fit-wise, it is generally good. I got a medium (my usual size) and I have plenty of room at my shoulders and chest. It hasn't been necessary yet, but I can easily wear up to a medium-weight fleece jacket as an additional layer without the overall feeling bulky or have my arm movement hindered. Speaking of which, arm articulation is very good. I can raise my arms without the rest of the coat being pulled up significantly.

That said, this coat has no ability to stretch. This became apparent once I started to keep my insulated winter gloves in the front pockets. This made the waist area tight when zipping up. In addition, the interior snow skirt in my coat was also tight even while hanging loose, ie not clasped up and in use. (Note: this might be just a defect in my coat.) I am lucky that I don't have a beer gut. Still, aside from the extra difficulty with zipping up, I do like the inherent air seal, which I would have created anyway by employing the hem elastics, so this is in fact a convenience for me. Since the tightness is at the waist instead of at the coat's hem, it does not affect my sitting comfort (ie, by pulling or bunching).

The odd features of the coat are the sleeves and the sleeves' inner cuff.

I love columbia products, and i love down coats. I thought i would love this, but had to send it back. I'll explain more:

First this is definitely a top notch product, and expected Columbia quality. It has a great fit, not baggy and not tight, great for people in shape (I'm 5'10" 175lb with a lean slightly muscular upper body and medium was perfect). It has many features and pockets galore! everything you need in a ski jacket. Also, it is plenty warm, super durable, actually ridiculously durable (outer material is stiff enough to rub against tree bark and i'm sure woulnd't rip), and warm.

but thats the thing... soo many features, but this jacket is heavy... like, physically weighs a lot. Isn't that good you ask? don't you want the weight and durability? well yes, but also depends what you are looking for. I myself choose down jackets because of lightness AND warmth. Though this has high quality 650 fill down, there isn't that much in this coat (comparatively to others), and feels like it relies on the shell and omni heat for warmth, with down as a bonus. My Millet expert down coat is half the weight of this, and but much warmer because of the fill amount, and it compresses much smaller than this ever can. Is it as bombproof as this columbia? definitely not... but i don't need it to be and prefer a lighter WEIGHT jacket.

so, this is definitely a 5 star jacket, minus 1 star for sleeves being slightly short. But the weight of the jacket made me return it. It's too durable for skiing/snowboarding (unless you plan to snowboard in hurricane wind and rain), and not warm enough for it's weight. i just preferred a different tradeoff on features. the conditions that merit this jacket i wouldn't snowboard in.

I got this coat for my boyfriend for christmas and this is his review:

I had lofty expectations for a new coat. Having had my previous Columbia down coat for twelve years, you might say I'm something of an effectionado. That coat got me through blistering cold, Blizzards, and high winds. The storage was impecable with 9 pockets (great for carrying all the winter essentials.)

After sporting this for a few weeks all I have to say is that coat technology has greatly advanced since 2002. The first thing that was apperent was the weight of the coat, it feels about 2/3 as light as my last Columbia. putting it on is like nothing you've ever worn. Instanty I felt the omni-tech working and adjusting to my temp. Stepping out into the chill winter air I couldn't feel anything but my own satisfaction.

This new baby has a build in face mask and a hood that will cover your dome, even with a helmet on. The pockets are ingeniously designed. Your able to grab your favorite devices with ease. The snow curtain keeps you extra warm while riding down the mountain. Add in water proof outer lining and zippers and you've got a Coat that will take you deep into the rockies during a deep freeze.

Comfort 9.5

It is so choice. If you have the means I highly recommend you pick one up

As an unfortunate Chicago-dweller I had the misfortune of experiencing this year's recent polar vortex and I had to invest in a real coat for warmth--I usually wear an overcoat. This thing is simply ridiculous though, it's wind proof, water proof, everything-proof. The arms are longer than other winter coats which I love, because I have full mobility of my arms without the coat lifting up even if I start doing jumping jacks.

The Omni-Heat interior is so warm I was almost sweating walking to the train station in -5 degree weather with -45 wind chill. The pockets are VERY deep and quite warm as well. There are pockets/zippers I haven't even discovered yet, and it has ventilation zips under each arm for when you don't need to salvage all the body heat you can. The hood is deep but requires the 'strings' to be tightened or the wind will simply blow it off over and over.

The top of the zipper (the main zipper/middle zipper) has a little sleeve on the opposite side that covers the top of it when it's zipped up all the way to protect your chin, and it is noticeably a comfort I hadn't considered in previous coats. The other thing I really like is the base of each arm/sleeve is sewn in a slant, so it covers your wrists if your gloves happen not to, plus it's aerodynamic and looks good.

My only question is why half the coat's down filling is separated by horizontal stitching while the other follows a zig-zag separation pattern.

This coat was the best purchase I've made in the "needs versus wants" department in years.
