The Columbia Railroad was an important part of the State-owned canal and railroad system connecting Philadelphia and Pittsburgh when Pennsylvania was struggling to meet the competition of the Eric Canal. The author was a railroad engineer on the line and gives on-the-spot accounts of the problems he encountered and how he solved them. He details the defense of the railroad against the invasion of Confederate troops in the early 1960's.
