Roe ( Frank Matsura: Frontier Photogra pher , 1981, Madrona Pubs.) uses the course of the Columbia River to relate the history and culture of the Pacific Northwest. The Columbia has been a vital component to that region for transportation, tourism, mining, railroads, logging, and fishing. Roe details the human geography of the river and its shores, and traces the history of the inhabitants, explorers, and river navigators. She also touches upon the flora, fauna, and weather. Her book provides a wealth of information and would make a great trip companion. However, it is not a travel guide in the practical sense. It provides fascinating reading for those interested in the Pacific Northwest and the large role the Columbia River has played in the region's history.
