Product Description

Since the dawn of human history, man has dreamed of a knife that would sharpen itself during normal use. Here it is, the patented brainchild of inventor Maj. Howard Pope (USAR Ret.). The secret is a diamond-coated spring sharpener built into the folder frame. The high-carbon stainless steel blade in satin finish features a strong full-width spine for most of its length, dual hollow grinds, and the single cutting edge. Because the internal diamond sharpening strip works on this one edge only, a tiny burr forms, which actually helps cutting action, acting as a microserration. This makes the Edgie tops for cutting cardboard boxes, rope, cord and even ripe tomatoes

2.0 out of 5 stars Great idea, but ..., May 26, 2007

This knife is of typical CRKT quality -- not bad for a production item. However, the patented self-sharpening feature leaves an incredibly fragile edge. Yes, every time one opens and closes the blade, it slightly sharpens itself across a diamond hone. What a clever (patented) idea. But then, when you put it in your pocket (or even hold it too tightly in your hand,) some frame components inside the knife will push against the razor-thin edge and bend it over, leaving a ragged gouge in the cutting surface. I don't think this is the inevitable burr created by constantly sharpening from only one side, which is noted by CRKT in the papers that come with the kinfe. This seems to be a design defect. CRKT could have built this thing so that the honed edge would not touch anything when folded. My copy of this knife is only a month old and its cutting edge already appears almost serrated. I collect knives and this one is a good addition to my collection because of the unique self-sharpen feature. However, as an every day carry knife I don't think it would last a year.

It was a great idea, but bad execution. This is what I consider a novelty knife. point blank.
