Just when we thought we had seen every way possible to open a folding knife, a prototype arrived from knife maker and inventor Charles Kain of Indianapolis, Indiana, that demonstrated his patented Fulcrum Action. It didn't take us long to purchase the rights to this surprising new lock for use in CRKT production folders. We felt the Fulcrum Action was perfect for a sleek design proposed by knife maker Russ Kommer, and so we put Russ to work integrating it into his folder, which we call the Fulcrum. New this year is the Mini Fulcrum model with a 2.19-Inch modified drop point style with a high hollow grind, made from premium AUS 8 stainless steel with a black titanium nitride finish. Scales are mother-of-pearl CPL. At only 1.9 ounces, it makes an exclusive personal carry. The knife world enthusiastically embraced the Fulcrum. It was voted the Imported Knife of the Year at the 2008 Blade Show in Atlanta, and was given a Special Innovation award at the 2008 International IWA Show in Nuremberg, Germany. To open a Fulcrum model, simply press the left side of the frame down with your thumb. The blade swings out to the 90-degree position. Then pull the left side of the frame back, gripping with your index finger at the choil, and the blade continues to rotate open and lock in the open position. After a few openings, you can do it naturally in one continuous, fluid action, or "Fulcrumation". To close the Fulcrum, simply release the stainless steel locking liner. One-hand closing is also fast and easy. The build uses our high-carbon steel InterFrame with a steel pivot at the back spacer. The stainless steel bolsters have a diamond pattern. All models come with a removable stainless steel pocket/gear clip.

The mini fulcrum is first and foremost a nice looking little pocket knife. I had my doubts about the CPL scales but the effect is very much like mother of pearl and doesn't look cheap or cheesy. As for the knife's performance, it is up to the standards for CRKT but, and this should be obvious, I would only trust it for light duties. The fulcrum opening gadget uses a cam to rotate the knife outward and then a liner lock snaps into place, creating a solid lock-up. The fulcrum function takes some practice, I had to show the guys at the knife counter how to use it, and the mini-fulcrum is so small that you feel like you don't have a solid grip on it. I've had numerous people ask how I do it without cutting myself and honestly I'm surprised I haven't yet. In the end, it's a clever little gadget and I give it a thumbs up for a gentlemen's or lady's folder.

I have been carrying this knife for a couple months now and I am relatively happy with it for the price. I find the steel to not hold an edge quite as well as benchmade knives I have had with the same or similar steel, but it is acceptable. Make sure you pick up the correct torx bit so you can adjust the tension in the screws, most on mine were a tad loose.

I really don't know how to review this knife... It works as a knife but it is kind of small and puny. The opening system is cool but not all that practical to me. I'm sure some people will like it but I guess I just like a bigger knife. Nothing against this knife, for it's purpose, it works.
