Product Description

Award-winning knife designer Allen Elishewitz has lived in the Far East and has practiced martial arts over the past 30 years. This training, along with his experience as a Recon Marine, gave Allen the perfect background to design these defensive writing instruments, CRKT Tao Pens. If the user is threatened or attacked, the pens can be used at three levels of defensive force, depending on the type of threat. "At the lowest level of engagement, the impact crown on the cap can be used to strike the assailant on the head or hands by raking or thrusting. "At the second level, the more pointed butt of the pen may be used to thrust or provide a disabling pressure point behind the ears, at the armpit or throat. "At the third level, if the attack persists, the pen point may be thrust for penetration in soft tissues of the throat, chest or abdomen with potentially lethal results if the assailant does not break off the attack." The pens are made of 6061 aluminum, precision-machined and hard anodized. The heavy cap is threaded so that it will not pull off in use, and castellated for greater impact. The flutes and grooves on the pen, combined with the pewter-toned stainless steel pocket clip, provide a secure grip. Four color schemes are available: no reflective olive drab and tactical black, plus brown with bright grooves and black with bright grooves. All Tao models are functional writing instruments which use the Fisher Space Pen ball point cartridge, a pressurized design developed for NASA. It has a tungsten carbide ball point and thixotropic ink which will write in freezing cold, boiling heat, underwater and at any angle-even upside down.

the best pen overall i own. i have a surefire, tuffwriter, benchmade, elite, and some others. they all have good points some exceeding this one. and it has to be said that i prefer screw on caps, to me the snap on caps are the weak link, they can and will fail in their o ring.(in my opininion only)
so overall i like this one the most. it is very well made, the black finish is not as nice as the surefire but the silver rings make a nice change from the usual tactical pen and provide a nice surface for grip. it is very well thought out, not only as a weapon, but as a writing intrument. i write all day for a living so i like how it fits in my hand nicely, it has to be a good writing pen for me to use it. as a weapon the two ends incorporate a design that is different from what i have seen before. very effective and very well thought out. not a copycat pen. designed to be strong and to hurt but looks innocuous. an original. kudos to the designer.
i will probably never use this pen as a weapon, but it would be the right tool if i had to use it. i can use it in the business setting and it looks nice, not like a weapon as alot do. this pen is great quality, looks good, is great for writing and will last a lifetime. solid nothing flimsy like many other pens (others often are great except for one glaring poorly thought out aspect) for me it is the best overall for my criteria. the others are nice or very nice in other ways, but dont make my cut. you may feel differently. i highly reccomend this pen.

This pen is designed for self defense. If your primary reason is to use it for writing then you are a little off kilter. I wouldn't carry this pen around with me at a safe place like an office environment, but I would carry it with me when I am traveling where I 'might' need a pen or if I feel I might have to wander into an unsafe area. If I am going out on a night on the town, I might carry this pen with me as well. Again, I stress... it is a self defense tool not a pen for primary purposes...

On to the review. The top of the cap has a castle nut feel to it. It is great for raking across the sternum, face or any other soft nerve riddled tissue. The back end of the pen has a small dull steel tip which is perfect for striking pressure points or bones. It also leaves a nice little logo after use. Although it takes some time, which I actually advocate considerably... You can screw off the cap and the pointed ink portion of the pen can be used as a deadly force tool. I believe that the couple of seconds it takes you to remove that cap is how long it should take you to think about the consequences of acting with deadly force. Besides, most situations can be diffused without using deadly force anyways, but if you are in a stand off, you can unscrew the cap while backing away. Some might complain that it would take to long if the assailant has already presented opportunity, capability and intent against you, but deadly force does not need to be applied immediately to disarm using the pen. After which you could choose to unscrew the cap as necessary. For police, I think the only situation it would be used would be in a ticket writing situation where a police officer were to be attacked in the middle, but the pointy side would already be out in that case.

I like how tame / refined it looks, and I also like the way the cap threads. It offers good grip, and while I've yet to fend off any criminals, terrorists, or bears with it, it seems to be a capable tool.

My few issues with the pen are that it is quite heavy (maybe this was intended?) and the screws holding the clip are far too dainty. Maybe this was a result of keeping them small... but it makes removing the clip quite difficult. I wear the pen in a pocket and occasionally need to 'tweak' the clip back, so this is an unwelcome shortcoming.

Overall, great pen, oh, almost forgot... it writes well too.

I've looked at a number of "tactical" pens and at the $40 price point this is about as good as it gets.

Very well made. No overly sharp spots.

You will do a bit of screwing and un-screwing to use the pen, but thats hard to avoid if you want it solid when either opened or closed.

The black with silver rings is quite attractive, and gives it the look of a classic fountain pen and therefore will be unlikely to draw undue attention.

It is a bit heavy, and probably would not be a pen you want to write with all the time. But as another reviewer noted, when you are out and about and might need a pen or some added protection, it fits the bill nicely.

Comes in a very nice zippered case, that even has a mesh pocket for holding refills. The case really isn't something you're likely to use or carry the pen in, but is a nice touch and particularly so if you are giving it as a gift.

It comes with a Fisher Space cartridge, but also will take the very nice Parker gel refills (part #30525PP).

Design flaw? Don't think so. That reviewer may have gotten one that had damaged threads. Mine screws together solidly at all points.

Country of Origin: Everything I can find (including the box it comes in) says they are made in China, not Oregon.
