Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Slip into the Switchback™ for low-profile support that looks as good on the street as it does on the singletrack. The mid version of this popular shoe covers the ankle for increased support and protection while maintaining a minimalist look and feel. Columbia's revolutionary new Techlite® heel moves dense stabilizing elements to the outside (putting softer material directly against your foot) to provide a cushioned and conforming fit to alleviate pain and irritation where trail runners felt it most. Omni-Grip® traction on the rubber sole grips rocks, dirt, mud and just about anything else you encounter on off-road adventures. Breathable mesh and a soft material in the flex zones mean superior comfort with great agility and ease of movement. The gusseted tongue keeps out rocks, sticks, and dirt while light, sinewy overlays offer additional protection without adding unnecessary bulk.

These are my second pair of Columbia shoes. I'm a trail runner, and after owning the Switchbacks for two days I can highly recommend them. They give great ankle support and have a large toe-box like all of the Columbia shoes. Flexibilty is good and traction is fabulous! And I love the cyber-yellow!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect!, October 24, 2010

Got these for a steal, and now am only wishing I picked up several pairs!

Needed a lightweight hiking/trail running shoe for playing disc golf. The only thing these are not is completely waterproof, because of the heavy venetilation around the toe cap.

Very light, EXTREMELY comfortable, and so far the durability has been fantastic. Hard, fast pivots on rough concrete has been known to devastate a lot of shoes (See Keen Milo's for example), especially the outsole. I was a little apprehensive, as I was initially planning on going for something with a vibram outsole, but as of yet the durability seems to be right on par. Lots of hard rounds and they still look brand new inside and out. These have been holding up absolutely fantastically, and add to that they're probably are the most breathable shoe I have ever owned.

Even at almost twice the price of the bargain I got these for, I plan on getting another pair or two of these whenever the pair I have bites the dust, and I'm optimistic these will get me all the way through next season, whereas I usually go through 2-3 pairs of comparably priced trail running/hiking shoes.

The fit is fairly true to size, perhaps a hair on the big side. I usually wear an 11.5/12, and own these in a 12. Next time would probably go for the 11.5.

So far they've outperformed every other shoe I've ever owned at the sub-$100 level, and for any non-waterproof application, I would recommend these to absolutely anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars First pair of Colombia shoes--won't be my last, September 25, 2010
This review is from: Columbia Sportswear Men's Switchback Mid Hiking Boot (Apparel)
I was desperately in need of a new pair of hiking shoes--my old ones finally gave out, and I was going on a nine-mile hike the next day. So as I searched the piles of shoes at the local outdoor gear store, vainly trying to find anything in a size 13, I picked up these shoes. And that's when I noticed something that's tough to learn on Amazon--the Switchback is insanely light, particularly for an over-the-ankle shoe. The tread looked fine, and a quick walk in them around the store convinced me to buy them--I really needed something, and the price was right as well.

Long story short, they performed admirably on that high-altitude hike--no blisters and sure footing the whole day. I've done two more fairly demanding hikes in them so far and I'm very impressed with the fit, comfort, and performance. These hikes have been in a variety of terrain (marsh, forest, open field, scree, above-treeline mountainside, and even some actual trails) and the Switchbacks have handled everything I've thrown at them. They probably wouldn't be my first choice if I was carrying an 80 lb pack, but for trailrunning or day hikes, they're perfect.
