4.0 out of 5 stars Columbia products are truly for the outdoors...
My Mom is an avid hiker and was looking for a pair of good, sturdy, winter hiking shoes without breaking the bank. I happened to be up late a couple of days ago when I read about Amazon's sale of these particular shoes. I just got them in the mail today and my Mom absolutely LOVES them.

The shoes have a good balance-- and if you're looking for something...

2.0 out of 5 stars Cute shoe but hurts arch
I initially bought this shoe because it was cheap and looked cute. However, when they arrived and I put them on I immediately noticed that they hurt my arch. Well, I have been wearing them off and on for about three weeks and they still hurt. Can't return them because I think that wouldn't benefit me. Will probably try to change insoles.

This review is from: Columbia Sportswear Women's Beartooth Trail Shoe (Apparel)
My Mom is an avid hiker and was looking for a pair of good, sturdy, winter hiking shoes without breaking the bank. I happened to be up late a couple of days ago when I read about Amazon's sale of these particular shoes. I just got them in the mail today and my Mom absolutely LOVES them.

The shoes have a good balance-- and if you're looking for something lightweight, these fit the profile. These shoes probably wouldn't work well for a really cold, snowy, terrain but would be perfect for 35 - 40 degrees and up (you should consider investing in some thick, warm, woolen hiking socks in general for hiking shoes). Because we're in Northern CA, these shoes fit the design and feel that my Mom was looking for.

The general belief concerning Columbia footwear is that they have a tendency to be 1/2 size smaller. My Mom wears a 6 1/2 and I purchased these in 7 (no half sizes) and they fit really well. What you should know is that not all of Columbia's shoes are 1/2 size smaller-- I also purchased the Columbia Karasi Trail Shoe and I got these in my Mom's exact size and it fit her perfectly. My assumption from this experience is that when the shoe ONLY comes in whole sizes, then go the 1/2 up (i.e. you wear a 6 1/2 but you should order a 7), and if they have exact sizes you may want to gamble and just get the exact size that you would normally wear (but don't take my word for it... go with your gut instincts and experience with Columbia products).

Overall, very happy purchase which my Mom will enjoy for all seasons.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great weekend hiker, December 16, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This shoe was purchased for weekend hiking trips. The trails were moderately strenuous with mixed terrain including rocks and sand. These shoes performed very well with no heavy break in period. They gripped on wet and uneven surfaces yet were not bulky or awkward. The style is not "clunky" which is great when using for casual walking.

5.0 out of 5 stars no "breaking in", January 18, 2009
I am a diabetic and I try to find comfortable shoes with support because I have trouble with my feet. This is the first shoe that I have tried that required no breaking in. I wore the shoes all day with comfort. They have very good arch support and did not come untied. I don't hike but I find this shoe good for everyday wear.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice Shoes, January 14, 2009
Great light-duty trail/hiking/walking shoes for this price--I got them within $20! Good looking, good traction, good cushioning and good comfort with warm and breathability.
I would like to pick a hole in for Columia and Amazon to do even better job. The non-marking outsole maybe designed to compromise to indoor requirement but may suffer less durability on hard road surface such as cement or bricks. The XTS also remarkably loses traction on wet smooth hard surface while it does well on dry. Another comment is for Amazon: these shoes I got were advertised as with OmniTech of waterproof and AgIon anti bacteria functions, but when I go to columbia.com, it says this BearTooth S8 with OmniTech is only available outside US. You sold a conventional BearTooth S8 I think.

Awesome hiking shoes! I got these for $15.99 and love them. They run a little bit big, but will be perfect with thick socks!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great value, January 10, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
When this shoe was designed, they had in mind today's multi-tasking woman. The sole has lots of grip without hanging onto mud and rocks; the fabric breathes well without letting in moisture on those soggy Northwest days; and the level of comfort without weight is exceptional. The soft tan/grey color goes well with a variety of chinos or jeans. I'm glad I bought them not only for the wearability factor but because they stay tied, don't slip in the heel and still have wiggle room for my toes. Like I said before, they are a great value.

These shoes were very comfortable. It had a nice, thick sole that kept me from feeling any of the rocks under my feet. I did a day hike in these on a trail that had an inch or two of packed snow and these shoes kept my feet dry.
